For some reason when I click log out on the home page the web site doesn't log me out. Does anyone else have this problem? What can I do to actually log out?

Well, you can try logging out from the top of this page. But more to the point, unless you are on a public computer, why would you log out at all? All logging out does is disassociate the cookie (which gets stored in any case) with the site. If you don't log out and leave, when you return to the site, you are still logged in, saving you that trouble. Of course if you are doing this from a Library or some other public space, I can understand.

However, in answer to your question, I think (not sure about this) that there are actually two levels of log in, one for access to the DB and one for the fourms.

Unless phpBBS times a session out (I run one and I've never checked whether it does that), you see the same "new" posts all the time unless you actually log out, then log back in, or refresh every page.

No, to see the new posts, all you have to do is laeve the site. The next time you come back, you'll still be signed in and the new posts will be the ones that were made in the intervening time.

Other than logging out, how does one "leave" a site on the web? Browsers operate in what might be called "disconnected state". IOW, you request a page, you get it, then you're no longer "connected" to that site.

Just going to another site won't do anything, since the first site has no idea that you did.

Funny, works just fine for me. I was here on RR, then went to several other websites over a period of a couple of hours, then came back here, and I saw there was a new post in this forum. I clicked on the forum, and saw a new post was in this topic. Read it and now I'm replying to it.

I'm not a web programmer so I can't explain how it works, but I know it works for me. Don't even have to log off the internet. I just open my Favorites, select a website and go to it. When I want to come back here, I click on the link to here, and when I arrive, I'm still logged in and the forums and topics with new posts are marked as such.

It's FM!

Add: In fact I don't even have to leave RR to see new posts indicated. If I go into a forum and topic, when I go back up to the forum level (don't know the correct term here, just moving up and down the levels), I can see the indication that new posts have been made while I've been reading and posting to the previous topic.

Whereas that is true, the site doesn't care about that, your cookie is updated when you leave the site, even if you just go to another site and return, it is a new session. You can play with it a little by having two windows open on the forums and leaving on one, the other will maintain your status, but if you leave with both of them, you are now closing the session.

Trust me, I wouldn't have said what I did if it didn't work that way. :D

What's the line from the movie Stripes: "That's a fact, Jack!"

You can trust Lou, he's not here from the government to help you!

I'm sure that Lou is correct, and I don't "log out" while surfing the web, BUT I WOULD RECOMMEND "logging out" before going offline! This is a good habit to form because you would never want to stay logged on a site like you bank, stock companies, etc.

Call me a coward, or old fashioned, but I don't do any of that online, nor do I keep financial records on any computer that has online access. The only thing I have is a limited-credit charge card for PayPal. Anyway, I stray offtopic here, so that's all.

Would you believe, "Almost correct?"

Cookies are set when a page is requested. Expiration is either when the browser window is closed (not explicitly set) or at a time certain (explicitly set). :)

But don't get me started, or I'll go off on CNet and one of their explanations of how cookies work (which is all wrong!)

I use my laptop for all my scanning needs, gps software programming and the Dodge message boards. My laptop is wireless and I shut down the router at night.I never log out of rr and very rarly does it ask me to log in.I close Internet Explorer every night and power down my laptop - killing my session.I have rr in my favorites and everytime I visit this site it shows me as logged in and displays new posts. The same thing with Fordyce site also...I should video the laptop powering up and connecting to rr as logged in for kicks..Anyway great site and my thanks to all the people involved ...

Very few people are 100% wireless, which may affect the issue at hand.

Jerry
What does that mean? My laptop uses no wires making it 100 percent wireless and would have no affect on the issue at all. My point was that I kill my internet connection by shutting down the router.I also close I E several times a day and and bounce from site to site all day and rr always displays new posts and shows me logged in.If I flush all temp internet files from windows then I have to log in.

Well, I was not trying to be derogatory. Actually I'm jealous. What I was saying, is that on a DSL, or cable connection, you could be online full time.

True but it has its downside.Hackers delight I get so many attacks while I am at work, I need to start shutting down everything at night.I did not think you were being derogatory either so all is good
