• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have an XTS3000 VHF that I use. I'm getting ready to upgrade to a tri-band Harris XG-100p since I need to use the radio in multiple counties covering VHF, UHF, and 7/800 MHz.

With my XTS 3000 I'm planning to let my mother use for firefighting. The current antenna is an 8.5" what I'd consider whip style antenna. The antenna was large for me when I was using it for such application but I made it work. She's looking for a smaller antenna if it is at all possible.

Topographically our area is mountainous, sub urban, light urban (not a onestop light town basically). VHF range is 15X.

I'm not looking for a super stubby 3" antenna as I know that using shorter antennas comes at the cost of performance, and I don't want to put her safety at risk.

Do reliable antennas between the 4"-6" range exist for this model of radio? I know if I use the wrong antenna I can fry the radio or components inside of it, which I do not want to do so I'm deferring to people who know more than me.

She's more use to the size of antennas that came standard on the HT1250's or this one that they were replaced with then they were damaged in the field: Motorola PMAD4042 VHF Heliflex Antenna 136-150.8 MHz and this kind (depended on the tech and yes I know this is a UHF but VHF variants of this style existed) Motorola PMAE4016A 403-520 MHz UHF Whip Antenna

The Visar VHF antenna is a good option if you can still find them, but they are frequency band specific and not super wide-band.

Yep - another vote for me for the VHF Visar antenna. I have them on all my VHF portables and they work great. Nowhere near as long as those VHF a wideband whhhhips.

Another plus for the Visar antenna for VHF. Had to go to Federal Court once. All the security in the building were using the Visar antennas on their XTS5000’s.

Yes this is exactly what I'm after. Thank you all very much! I appreciate the information, and I'm glad I asked so I didn't fry components inside of the radio.
