• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

My VP8000 has arrived (picking it up tomorrow) but did not come with a programming cable, so I need to purchase one. I have seen prices ranging from $155 to $54. Where have people had the best luck purchasing a VP8000 programming cable for the best price? I have read the proper part number is KPG-236um.

Get the OEM cable, do not go with any kind of aftermarket. Even some of the Kenwood OEM KPG-36X cables would not work without a factory approved mod so all the techs here have both the KPG-236 and the KPG-36.

OEM for the win. PLEASE!
cost 190.00 with shipping.
HOWEVER, is this an issued VP or personal? If it is issued, then I caution you to not tinker with it.

It's personal. I may not need the cable at all because the VP8000 has WiFi and Bluetooth programming. Do firmware updates require a cable?

I picked up the VP8000 this morning and unfortunately, it did not come with a programming cable. That was not unexpected however. I am finding that when I turn the radio on it says “Provisioning Required”, “Connect to Armada for option programming.

I was fortunate enough to be able to get this radio directly from a dealer under what is known as a “Seeder Program”. This means the radio comes with all entitlements enabled, yet I was able to purchase the radio at a much discounted price. The goal is for me to share my experiences with other FF/Medics, Chiefs and Officers.

However, it looks like I will need a programming cable to activate all the entitlements. I suppose this makes sense because my understanding is that entitlements are now tied to user accounts/profiles rather than directly to the radio. Don’t take this as gospel. I am new to this and may be incorrect.

So now to find a way to obtain a legitimate programming cable as soon as possible.

Myself and a few others I know with VP8000s have bought the BlueMax cable and had 0 issues. All you really need is to use it once and enable over the internet programming. No reason to spend $150+

I saw those. Might be my best option, though I still will have to wait for shipping. I was going to play with it this weekend. Oh woe is me but if that is the worst of my problems I am a lucky man.

The OEM cable is superior quality for sure, but the BlueMax cable is entirely adequate. OEM has a brass thumbscrew instead of a flathead screw, the cable is stiffer, and seems to more reliably connect.
