got my mobile setup for the HT moving this morning. Thanks for the input on things...I'll see how this goes. I do wish I had the antenna analyzer to test things...any recommendations on a reasonably priced one?

Glad you got you got it all installed.

It looks good, but I am really in favor of using much shorter mobile antennas for VHF/UHF.

Could anyone give feedback on low profile magnet antenna? I m not sure I want to drill into this car yet :/ I have the same id52-A Plus as mentioned in this thread.

I am currently driving a 2016 Toyota Camry. I'll be looking to sell it in the next 12 - 18 months so I don't want to do anything to greatly alter the vehicle itself. I just purchased a nice HT, Icom ID-52A, and I'd love to be able to use it in my vehicle without the shielding issue of the roof.

I've considered maybe getting a window antenna and getting some sort of air vent mount for the actual HT (like a cell phone holder).

I would be fine using a mounted antenna via a magnet, but just unclear how to run the antenna cable to the HT without modification or taking apart the car some.
Since your installation will be temporary in this vehicle I would suggest the neat little Diamond MR77S magmount along with a Bluetooth headset and the 12 cigar lighter lead. I use this setup at the moment for shifting between work vehicles.

I also have the Diamond MR73SMA to pop in my bag when I go off on my travels as it’s tiny but works well.

Tried using a portable handheld radio in a car. During several trips in a passenger car, it turned out that the diameter of the magnetic base is critical, I recommend using a base wider than 5 "and using an external microphone for ease of use of the radio. The antenna was dual-band, stood on a magnetic base. With a magnetic base diameter of 4 ", the safe speed of movement is approximately 55 miles per hour. To connect an external antenna, you need an adapter between different antenna connectors. I recommend using a power adapter for the radio for long-term use in a car. I will not name the exact models of magnetic bases and VHF \ UHF antennas, since I do not live in the USA.
