Outdoor warning sirens for alerting purposes is what Pony Express is to e-mail - ancient technology.

I signed up for the text notification for severe weather on WHAS' internet site. There were about ten different warnings issued for Jefferson County Wednesday evening. I got a text message for each of them about two minutes before MetroSafe told us on the radio about the warning and outdoor siren activation. The only thing that happened faster was the EAS on cable TV and that was by seconds.

I'm glad to hear Metro government is moving ahead with a new alerting system. I happened to be at a meeting where the mayor was mentioning this, and I was sitting sitting close to two metro council folks. I think my words were "About damn time."

True,
HOWEVER, there is a great majority of the citizens are not computer literate
or have cell phones. the eldery, the young. or even have weather radios.
FWIW:
I bought 6 of the SAME capable weather radios 2 weeks ago
set them up for Jefferson county codes and gave one to each of the kids for their
homes. and one for the house and a spare, 4 of those worked great, the other two
no response to the alert tones.. reprogrammed those and we will see if they are
crap.. ARRRGGHHH so much for electronics.
and as far as cell phone coverage for text alerts. if you are in a marginal coverage
area, they are next to useless.. and there are areas in this county that show no bars
on the cell phones.

True. But I would still like to get hold of a 2T22 or similar siren for my little part of the world.

If I was a betting guy, I'd put a few bucks on the concept of if there ain't no cell phone coverage then there ain't no outdoor sirens nearby.

We stopped using outdoor warning sirens for alerting firefighters to fires decades ago because of coverage. Buildings are more soundproof and the ambient noise is greater.

The premise of outdoor warning sirens is to alert those who are "outdoors".

I agree that outdoor sirens are all but obsolete for alerting the FD. Everybody and their brother either has a pager, radio or cell phone anyway. But for weather related use, I would still install a reasonably sized siren for those people who are outside. I can't hear a pager, phone or radio over the engine of my tractor or mower, but a siren might do the trick. Besides, I just want one.

Another siren related news article

JUNEAU, Alaska >> Glitches are being reported in Alaska's tsunami warning system
after Thursday night's 7.3 earthquake in the Aleutian chain.
State Department of Homeland Security spokesman Jeremy Zidek says tsunami warning
messages via TV and radio were sent late, about the same time the warning was being canceled.
The Kenai Peninsula Borough reported its sirens, tied to a weather radio system, only went off
when the alert was cancelled, causing some anxiety and bewilderment.
Officials couldn't immediately say why the glitches occurred, though Zidek says
the state does not rely on just one system to alert communities to possible dangers.
He says calls are made and emails are sent to emergency officials. The Kenai Peninsula
Borough emergency director says he learned of the warning by email.

We're upgrading our computer network with a new server. So from time to time we have to re-boot the computer that is connected to the live feed and the guy who does that is on vacation. Probably have a couple of more outages in the next week or so.

Thanks for the feedback! It's a great feed with very clear reception and I miss it when it's offline. What type of scanner are using?

"Move along, nothing to see here..."!

Just a little tweaking of a backup system at a remote site. If you heard it, then it must work!

IF that is the backup system, sounds a lot better than the Primary...
Just my opinion , of course!

Had a chance to work with the RadioShack Pro-106 for about a week, programmed it using WIN500
I'm impressed.
the multisite issue that I had with the Pro-96 (poor audio or warbling ) is not present in this model.

programming in the "Object oriented scanning" format is a bit different than the old "bands" and such
been used to for so many years.
Once its programmed, and accessed by the WIN500 program, easy to add or change.
Cloning from one Pro-106 to another is a snap.. simple cable and keyboard operation..

Had a problem with battery charging, still trying to figure that one out..

thats my two cents ..
As with anything, YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY !

MetroSafe Issues

I recently moved to Louisville and I am having issues with picking up MetroSafe. I hoped someone could help me out.

I am using a Uniden BC996T near the Stony Brook area with various antennas.

I utilized the auto programming via BuTel and Radioreference.com for MetroSafe. For some reason I cannot get it to trunk. I have checked everything I can think of with no success. The scanner trunks Warren County's (non-digital) 800 system just fine.

I have noticed that if I scroll to 854.4875 (one of the trunked channels) and hold there I see various ID's scrolling which are active but I near nothing. What am I not thinking of? I am going crazy. Thanks for the help.
