Huntsville 700/800 Mhz. - Active Control Channels
Here is what I found while scanning in Huntsville on June 16, 2012.

854.16250 This trunk system is very active.
^^ Active Control Channel: System ID: 491B / M36: 3600 baud

854.31250 Did not get a chance to monitor this system other than the control channel.
^^ Active Control Channel: System ID: 4E2F / M36: 3600 baud

771.70625 No voice traffic heard on any of the 700 Mhz. freq.’s. listed.
^^ Active Control Channel: System ID: 46B / 96: 9600 baud / T0302 - Zone 3, Site 2
Also searched the 700 Mhz. band but did not find any other active freq.’ s or control channels.

855.7125 No current CC info, only analog voice traffic heard.
^^ Active analog voice freq., I was receiving this freq. trunking on the
491B - 3600 Trunk system while monitoring Control Channel, 854.1625
This freq. was not a control channel, at least not yet, only analog voice traffic heard.

These are the only three active control channels I found while in Huntsville on 700/800 Mhz.
I also searched for any active State EDACS freq'.s or control channels but I did not find any active on 800 Mhz.

Some nice research there. Hopefully it can be repeated in a few months to see what if anything has changed then. From your findings it's looks like it's still going to be a little while before things start really happening.

Madison County Goes Digital Soon

The Madison Co. Sheriff's Office will receive their new digital handhelds this week and will go on the air in a testing of the system. As soon as the FCC assigns the other frequencies, the Huntsville Police/Fire will follow. The Sheriff's main channel will not be encrypted nor will Huntsville Police on their main channels. There will only be 2 channels on the air with a control channel for the time being until the FCC decides the other frequencies. Stay tuned.

The radios will be given out on 8/22/12. The only traffic left on the sheriff's frequency should be Gurley, New Hope and Cross Roads until they get their radios.

It looks like 30225 is Sheriff Dispatch. Other talkgroups logged so far are 455, 30000, and 30228. I ran PRO96Com for about 3 hours then switched to Win500 so that I could listen and log just talkgroups.

Madison County Sheriff Deputies are being issued new handhelds TODAY.

This is a test of the system to help find any deficiencies in coverage.

They will still have access to their existing VHF handhelds during this transition.

Does anyone know if a site will be installed on Madkin Mountain? With just the 5 sites that are currently listed on the license, I am thinking they will have some holes in coverage in the Triana area and in Limestone County where the new Huntsville Fire Station is located. I am not sure which site I am receiving, but my decode is averaging around 23%. I am in SW Madison near Wall Triana Hwy and Madison Blvd.

The tower on Rainbow Mountain will cover that just fine.

Madison County Sheriff Patrol 1 channel will remain unencypted as well as HPD North, South and West when they come on the air in the future. All other talk groups such as SWAT, Narcotics, Jail, K9/SRO, Records, Special Events, etc will be encrypted.

Any idea about the Fire Tactical talkgroups staying enencrypted?

"The only downside is those in the public who enjoy listening to scanner traffic may have a tougher time with the encrypted messages". Tough time? How about impossible. I love how people, who know nothing about radios, inject their "knowledge" into the conversation. Also, the Sheriff's Office has had nothing to do with the city of Huntsville's 800 system for the last 20 years. The county did however, take their old VHF frequencies when Huntsville went to 800.

I have been approved to add a feed for this new system and hope to have it up and running (and feeding) this weekend.

On my Uniden 996xt at work, the audio is horrible. Definitely digital!
Reminds Me of the early days of Powertel PCS phone service, later absorbed by T-Mobile.

Happy to hear that the dispatch channels are going to remain in the clear. Here in Tuscaloosa most law enforcement is now P25 with encryption. I'm all for encrypting sensitive information, but I've never understood why anyone would need to encrypt a dispatch channel.

Because some chiefs and sheriffs are under the impression that a lot of criminals have scanners. Believe me, Joe Crackhead doesn't have a scanner on him when he's breaking into a house looking for something to pawn. Gadsden encrypted everything on their system. Even the water department.
