I have been approved to add a feed for this new system and hope to have it up and running (and feeding) this weekend.

On my Uniden 996xt at work, the audio is horrible. Definitely digital!
Reminds Me of the early days of Powertel PCS phone service, later absorbed by T-Mobile.

Rob

I have the same garbled audio with my PSR-500. If I understand correctly what I saw using PRO96Com a couple days ago, only 2 of the 5 sites are working. Once all 5 are in operation, that audio problem should disappear.

We had the same problem in Ohio when Hamilton County's P25 system first went online. I THINK that garbled audio is caused by one site keying up a bit slower that the other and causing a problem similar to intermodulation for the scanners. There is supposed to be a way to override that for multi-site systems on the PSR-500, but I can't find it. Check the manual, if you got one, for your 996XT. It may have a similar function. The manual for my PSR-500 is more like a "Quick Start Guide" than a complete documentation that we used to get with scanners.

Audio quality scanning this system varies greatly with regard to location. Driving around today, I confirmed that when the scanner is in reception range of both active sites, the audio is garbled. Driving north on Rt 431 from New Hope then west of I-565, the audio was clear and very listenable until I got west of the NASA Space and Rocket Center. It appears to me that when I was obviously out of range for one of the two active transmitter sites, the audio was good. When I was in and area where signal from both sites was available, the audio was garbled. I think when all five sites are in operation, the problems with the garbled audio that some of us are now having will stop.

I have the feed for the new system up and going.

Madison County Sheriff Live Scanner Audio Feed

I have adjusted the levels as best I can guess from listening locally and routing back through the internet.
I am running the audio from a 996XT, through an Alesis audio compressor, and then encoded by an HP thin Client PC.

Let me know if the audio is too hot or needs to be boosted some.

Thanks,

My audio on TG 30228 is very choppy and completely unintelligible. TG 30225 is almost always good.

I'm using a GRE PSR-500 and just south of Capshaw Mountain in Madison County.

Is any one else getting readable decode on 30228?

Perhaps I've gotten a clue from Pro96Com. TG 30228 appears as "Group (Enc)" while 30225 comes up as "Group". Not real familiar with PRo96Com but maybe this means 30228 is encrypted?

That is correct. With Pro96Com, when you see "Group (ENC)," it means the talkgroup is encrypted, or at least that radio is on that particular talkgroup is. Otherwise, it's in the clear.

Do you know when Huntsville will switch over to this new system?

According to my sources, HPD does not anticipate changing to the new system until the near the end of this year.

That gives the public about 3 months to continue with their analog scanners.

I think I'll keep my Bearcat Trunktracker for aircraft once everyone around here goes digital. I wonder if aircraft will one day be required to go narrowband?

For aircraft to be required to narrowband, it would have to be approved by other countries. That is a radio system that is in use worldwide. Likewise the VHF Marine band. I think there was a proposal a few years ago to narrowband the marine frequencies, but I do not remember anything happening with it.

Railroad frequencies have been narrowbanded, but that is a communications system in the USA and Canada only, and the FCC has total control over the manufacture of the radios.

We'll be lucky if they keep the main dispatch talk groups in the clear as has been reported they will. Expect everything else to be encrypted. If you have spent anytime listening to the 800mhz SmartNet system you'd know why they want to encrypt. 'nuff said.

Sounds like a great upgrade! No doubt many people in the area will have to upgrade their scanners soon so they can listen to comms

I ran PRO96Com for a couple hours today on this system. @ new frequencies - 770.80625 and 771.98125 - are now active. Here is the Tower0302 file.

Guess it's time to jump in here. Been listening to local systems for about 7 years, so probably got my moneys worth out of my analog scanners. Any recommendations on which digital scanner to buy? Is the Bearcat worth the extra cost?

From what I read here, we're going to lose all but dispatch 1 2 and 3 on HPD. Any ideas on whether HSV Fire will encrypt? Hate to blow $400 on a new scanner, but totally hooked on listening to HPD and HFD. Thanks to those who have been monitoring the new digital system and providing details about it's deployment.

not going to tell ya which one,but i'm running the home patrol with extreme upgrade. I'm in albertville well almost guntersville with a scantenna about 20' in the air with a 10dB amp, and i'm receiving all of the old and new madison county traffic easily. Also several other digital syatems including albertville and cullman, and when the winds blowing just right jefferson county as well lol. it is an investment but after owning many scanners i am sold on the hp1. oh and about every analog system in a 60-75 mile radius as well. Maybe this will help. Good luck. And thanks as well to all the guys figuring out this new system.

Don't forget TDMA is going to be just as much a problem too. Pretty hard to suggest buying anything right now with that looming just over the horizon.

When you get a chance could you move or delete your existing Tower0302 file and make a fresh run? I suspect that now those 2 700 MHz freqs have been turned up that the 2 800 MHz are now gone. Contrary to the statement in each tower file, the program DOES read existing data into a logging session, so if some previously logged freqs are no longer active they'll continue to show up.
