Madison City will be the next to move. An article in Friday's paper indicates they have ordered new digital radios for Fire and Police.

Does anyone have an up to date run of Pro96Com for the Huntsville towers?

Here is a Tower302 file from today. Nothing has changed on the system since my last post several weeks ago. Now that Madison City has ordered radios, I will start running this more often.

Question for those of you that have been listening to the new system...

For Huntsville PD, I understand their dispatch channels are in the clear. How much traffic are you hearing on the unencrypted channels?

I'm considering upgrading to a digital scanner but if most of the "action" moves to an encrypted channel after the initial dispatch goes out I'm not sure if it's worth spending the money to just listen to outgoing dispatch calls. I really enjoyed listening to the car-to-car conversations in each precinct's common channel on the analog system, especially during the night shift. I'm guessing those precinct-common channels are encrypted now?

The 3 dispatch talk groups are the only HPD channels that can be monitored. I don't listen the HPD so I can't say how much traffic beyond dispatches is on the clear talk groups. Likewise with the Madison County Sheriff, the dispatch talk group is in the clear, everything else is encrypted. Huntsville Fire also has their dispatch talk group in the clear, and once in a while I hear clear traffic on a tactical talk group, but most of HFD talk groups are encrypted.

Thanks for the info Dave. I suppose I'll save my money and buy something else at Huntsville Hamfest this year ;)

I ran Pro96Com for several hours overnight and this morning. Found several new talk groups:

277 Unknown
639 Unknown
641 Unknown
649 Unknown
653 Unknown

30325 Madison Police Dispatch
30326 MPD (Encrypted)
30328 MPD (Encrypted)
30329 MPD (Encrypted)
30330 MPD (Encrypted)

30425 Madison Fire Dispatch
30427 MFD

30826 Unknown
30831 Unknown (Encrypted)
30832 Unknown
30836 Unknown
30837 Unknown
30839 Unknown
30840 Unknown

31039 Unknown

The 308## series talk groups may be either UAH, AL A&M or a hospital. There was a lot of activity on some of those talk groups overnight. I also noticed a lot of activity on talk group 283 overnight. Someone earlier mentions that they thought it might be one of the universities. Activity on the above 4 listed 6## series talk groups started after 6:00am. Hopefully, some of you can listen and help confirm who the users of these talk groups are.

I found two new frequencies for Site 302 Huntsville. The tower 3002 file is attached.
771.60625
774.76875

13 new talk groups
627
629
633
645
657
659
663
3801
3802
29906
30008 Probably another "Common" talk group
30437 Madison Fire
31325

I will have to spend some time analyzing the Grant Log later, But based on what I saw during the time I was actually watching the computer, I think talk groups 627 through 663 are associated with one user. I saw at least a dozen Emergency button flags on talk group 657.

While I was watching the computer, I did not see encryption used on any of the above talk groups.

If anyone can monitor them and help identify the long list of unknown user talk groups on this system, I will appreciate it. My talkgroups.txt file is attached. Thank you!

I have been hearing traffic on the 600 series talk groups that sound like utility operations so it is probably Huntsville Utilities. Sounds like it is patched with another radio system. There have been discussions concerning electical and water distribution operations on several of the talk groups. I have also heard traffic on 30840 that sounds like it is school related.

After looking at the Grant Log I can confirm that the 600 series talk groups are related. I see some radio IDs showing up on 2 or more of those talk groups. Time stamps on the Grant Log shows the 600 and 308## series talk groups to be daytime-only operations. The earliest use was 7:21am and the last was 3:46pm.

Huntsville Hospital, UAH and Alabama A&M have talk groups on the old system, so they should be showing up here sooner or later.

sounds like hpd is no longer on the old trunked 800 system anymore. as discussed earlier, west was digital-only first, and tonight north and south are only broadcasting on the digital system.

My Pro-97 is now dead as well. What scanners are you guys using to listen to the new system? I was told that the PSR-800 is the best bet, but I was also told that the PSR-500 would work. I read on the wiki that the 500 has the 700Mhz blocked due to intermod issues. I also read that the 800 is now discontinued.

I appreciate any replies to this. I have to have something to listen to Public Safety. :-(
