i'm considering an MFJ2100 Octopus on top of a fence top rail as a mast... not sure how durable it will be when left outside long term, or how well it will work with my MFJ939 tuner...

i originally wanted to get the CHA Spider, but they aren't currently being made and Chameleon says they won't restart making them any time soon. after reading reviews the MFJ seems to be regarded as less durable, but i'm hoping for the best.

anyone have any experience with it? left it out in the elements? put it on a fence top rail? any experiences would be great - thanks!

Have you considered building your own fan dipole? For the price of the MFJ2100 Octopus, you could easily purchase a high quality 1:1 balun (e.g., Balun Designs Model 1115) and add wires for the fan dipole. If you cut the wires correctly, you have multiple resonant dipoles and may eliminate the need for a tuner.

I would like to echo what R0am3r said. The octopus is way overpriced and Made From Junk. It would be a much better investment to find a good quality 1:1 balun and add some wire for the bands you're interested in. It could also be used for other projects in the future, e.g. a 1/4 wave vertical and so on.
