Weird air traffic over Macomb County, MI toady. Lots and lots of military activity earlier today. A lot of long constant dead carriers and some signals with just static type noise. Signal strength was good however. A couple air show frequencies were active tonight labeled Diamondformation from RR's database. I'm about 10 miles N-W from Selfridge ANGB.

I wonder If some out of town traffic came in. I've noticed that you can hear the A-10's pretty clear.

Also as an FYI ... looks like Selfridge A-10's may be tracking now on ADS-B Exchange.
See AE1975 and AE18E5 tracking North near the Thumb .... this would be nice if they leave this on !

So what's the purpose/use of the "burn" channel? I picked up the signal, but it just sounded like an open carrier.

That's basically all you'll hear is an open carrier noise.

This is a very specialized communications network that is aboard the 4 E-4B 747-200 NAOC & a few other aircraft in the US. Like AF-1 VC-25A's (747-200). The E-6's can do BURN CH also.
It's also called Northstar / Orderwire, C3, GEP (Ground Entry Point) WBFM. Wright Patterson AFB is the closest GEP station around here. This system keeps an open communications line between Commanders of nuclear forces during or after a Nuke attack.
It's supposed to Burn a signal thru all the noise of an attack. Hence the term BURN CH (Channel). The system is also Hardened against EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) effects from the blast. Basically it sounds like an open mike, that you can sometimes hear voice traffic, & a phone ringing in the background, that nobody answers. :)
I believe there is 8 channels above the main freq, & 8 channels below. That's why it's hard to hear any talking, they're slightly off freq.
I hope the link below works.

Some info on the E-4B 747's.

Good job everyone on posting today.

Thanks, Chuck!
Edit: That link doesn't seem to be working. It took me to the FAS, but I got "Page not found".

I see French Air Force Flight CTM1014 is over Montreal at 40K feet, I'm curious as to where they are headed? I know the RAF has been visiting down south(Fort Hood) a lot lately.

Earlier this morning one of the F-16s out of Toledo suffered some oil pressure issues after takeoff. He circled the Toledo area for several hours burning off fuel so he could re-land. I believe he eventually landed back at Toledo without incident.
