Still crappy shots but I saw them!
I have similar experiences with F22's & F35's at Langley. Have noticed that I can NEVER get a well-focused pic of an F22 or F35 in flight. Using a Canon SX720HS where even 'Manual' focus is only a starting point, and the camera still makes small adjustments to whatever target is in the square. Could the visual stealth characteristics be foiling the camera's algorithms?

I shot a couple hundred F-22 images over the weekend with a Nikon D750 and had no focus issues. Same with an F-35 demo at Andrews last September. Of course, that could vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and camera to camera!

Hi Guys,
I'm a bit of a newbie to this group, though not to the subject at hand. Things have been pretty quiet here in Richmond since 149FS/192FW moved down to Langley in 2007 to fly F-22's. I hit the Hampton Roads area when I can, but keep up with most things military by following this group. In order to better understand the environment where I don't regularly live, I'd like to pose a few questions:
1 - Washington Center: do members here feel like RadioReference's current coverage of the sectors is up-to-date? My Sector maps are 20+ years old, and I want to try and update them--and my Scanlists--in a more regular and practical way.

2 - Potomac Tracon: I've never managed to find complete info on this since the switchover, but would like to better understand anything that might've changed versus the separate areas of Class B & C airspace that I used to view separately.

3 - Norfolk Approach: A busy place with some seemingly unusual practices, and a LOT of QRM from the Navy's 380 MHz ELMR. I also don't see it listed as an entity of Potomac TRACON. Given that the seaport's JHOC is a joint Navy/Coastguard effort, I'm wondering if Norfolk Approach might involve some joint ownership with Air Force, Navy & Army entities who exist in that area. (am attaching a map that I got years ago, and that I've used to plot various approach/departure info in hopes of finding good vantage points.
Hoping to make some more day trips down there over the summer, but feel a need to improve my targeting and organizing of frequencies.

Any info or advice appreciated.

1331 LYNX-01 flight of 3 at FL410 starting down on 363.000 to FL340. push 307.275 down to FL240.
Guess headed back to Langley.

Checking tape 0835 local NOBLE-11 2 F-16's in CAP had a short TOI chase.req block from 2k-8k.
0842 NOBLE-11 at FL 12k going back to the CAP at FL230-240. Both rtb McEntire 09:20 local after NOBLE-21 replaced them
also from McCentire.Tanker was BANKR-50 who returned to Dover.

0920 had a JEDI-01 flight going to FL410 push ZNY 323.300 then said 372.200. Couple of F-22's Northbound?

Earlier Griffiss posted ranges were hot up his way today.. Maybe Langley F-22's up and back as LYNX and JEDI.

(All of the Viper airspace is active today along with the Fort Drum restricted areas and the Lightning 4 ATCAA, I wonder who is using all that today?)

I got screwed over at an air show recently, lots of photos came out blurry. You should be shooting in AF-C (continuous autofocus), center point preferably, and you can do back button autofocus so the camera only focuses when you tell it to. Of course make sure the shutter is set to something fast for fighter jets.

The Marine carrying the football had a radio dangling from his chest. Was this something he uses on the helo or is this an internal system he might use with USSS? Not sure. View attachment 142730
If I had to guess the MilAide and the
Doc are listening to Oscar (PPD freq). Only freqs I’ve noted from POTUS movements around DC have been Oscar, November (WH advance staff), and 167.0375, which I suspect is CAT.

Henry, do you hear Sierra 166.5125 around DC much? On various trips from past two admins to the RDU area that freq is silent until the plane lands and then gets busy until motorcade departs. Supposed to be WH Staff and/or WHCA

I have not, but I’ve only monitored via CloseCall, which may not be the most reliable way to determine freq usage.

Checked my recordings for today's Viper activity. The F-22's did indeed show up...

JEDI 2 x F-22's
LYNX 2 x F-22's
SHINER 11 4 x F-35's (VT ANG)
KNIGHT 21 2 x F-35's (VT ANG)
STRIKE 31 3 x F-35's (VT ANG)

All up on Viper common 226.300. I didn't hear anyone on the Ft. Drum ranges.
