Apologies for going OT, but a rhetorical question:
Why didn't they just get the Rave Mobile Safety panic buttons?
I like that the radio based panic switches don't rely on a smart phone or the cellular network in general. I realize that P25 subscriber units are expensive. However, I am not a fan of a solution where someone has to find a seldom used app on their smart phone and hope it all works. Especially when they are under duress and extreme stress.

MSP District 2 has switched over to their new fully encrypted dispatch talkgroups:

  • 42056 REGD2NE
  • 42057 REGD2SE

Other MSP Districts will follow shortly.

Why do they create new talk groups? Why not just encrypt the current TG’s. Will the old ones be deprecated & reused?

Adding encryption into an existing talkgroup can create severe interoperability and responder safety issues. If they simply add encryption to an existing talkgroup, it's easy to grab a radio that somehow got missed when encryption was loaded and think you are good to go. In all reality, They can hear you, but you can't hear them.

It's simply a safety measure to ensure that every radio that needs to talk on that talkgroup has the explicit ability to do so.

What @dispatchgeek said, plus loading the key in all the radios takes time. For most of the day, you'll have some switched and some not. Makes for a fun day on the dispatch side, to be sure.

When Ottawa county did it, they had to touch every radio in the county. It took months for them to migrate to an encrypted police dispatch. But they had them securely patched at the same time so there was no comms gaps. It was interesting seeing more and more radios move over until none were left.

Many schools in Michigan have P25 radios in the office with an extra big emergency button that is monitored by local dispatch (
). Today a local school accidentally pressed their button, and quickly released a statement on social media explaining the accidental trigger. So being the log hoarder I am, I tried to find the activation and I did. It turns out pretty much every school radio was on one encrypted TGID (shocker, right?) but it was kinda odd... There was little to no voice traffic, like ~20 calls over many months, but each radio "joins" the Talkgroup continuously all day. Doesnt "login" or "logout", it just keeps joining? is it like a ping effect to make sure the ship hasnt sunk or something?

Note: Im unsure if this is a sensitive topic... know RRDB approves of encrypted talkgroup submissions since you obviously cant monitor, but I just want to make sure before I add Unitrunker Screenshots... I only have TGIDs and RIDs, no identification or anything special...
Slightly OT, but I'm actually in the process of trying to get my work set up with an MPSCS channel that we can use to communicate with Dispatch during events such as a lockdown. I'm not sure if we'd end up with MPSCS-enabled radios in the building offices or if we'd be able to patch one of our channels over, but I've been in contact with the county's radio guy recently trying to get it worked out (I know he lurks here too). It'll be interesting to see, if we get the MPSCS radios, if we end up with a panic button.

Calhoun County is starting to play around with their new fire talkgroups. Heard them page Bedford Township on Sunday on 23713.
Also seeing increased use of 23699 and 3719 (already in DB).

I don't believe the simulcast cell is on the air yet, but there is a new tower here:

I'm pretty sure that the other towers are built as well, just haven't had the chance to drive out there & check 'em out.

Dug around & found the FCC license grants for the Calhoun County simulcast cell:
WSFX-588 (These are new frequencies):
769.33125
770.29375
771.70625
772.60625

WSGB-319 (These were previously assigned to existing sites):
851.6000 (from site 311/Battle Creek East)
852.0875 (from site 311)
852.3125 (from site 339/Battle Creek)
853.0500 (from site 339)
853.7750 (from site 114/Albion)
857.0125 (from site 311)
858.0125 (from site 311)

There is also a license grant from October 2024 for Consumers Energy;
856.4125 WSFK-967 for sites 311, 114, and all of the simulcast sites

G-Map link to the new simulcast sites:

It appears that sites 114 & 311 may be incorporated into the simulcast cell, and that site 339 may be going away, but that's speculative at this point.

Yes, I do indeed lurk. I have fellow dispatch center friends that let me know when I've been summoned; there seem to be a number of us on here. Also, I was a scanner nerd before I became a radio sys admin. 🤣
I absolutely love Kent Co's deployment, it's an awesome solution. I'd really like to some day incorporate something like that here, just need to find the money; as you probably know, it seems most public schools don't really have any extra $$$ to drop on overly priced radios.

In the interim, I haven't forgotten about you. We'll talk more, but you and I are on the same wavelength. We have an RCM to monitor emergency alerts, so you'd probably get access to the orange "dispatch appreciation" button on your radios depending on talkgroup assignment.

Every county has a xxCOM talkgroup, for all users to have a path. Others can be requested, but an InterOp/SpEv is probably easiest.

I decided to deploy another SDRTrunk / Broadcastify calls node in Ottawa County to compliment the one I already have in Muskegon county.
Both of them record all unencrypted traffic on all trunked channels. On April 2nd I recorded 23,127 calls across 138 talkgroups between Muskegon and Ottawa's sites.

Heres the total calls per TGID from both sites (not all are shown)
1743893801305.png

I do notice something unusual though... Some TGIDs are on both sites, but not the same # of calls... For example D6NORTH (MPSCS TGID 3069) has 624 calls on Ottawa's site, but 548 on Muskegon's site. Why would that be?

I have another spreadsheet of the call count per TGID per Site. Just ask.

The simplest explanation is that there may not have been any units on D6NORTH in Muskegon County at the time of those other transmissions. No radios on that TG affiliated with a site = No traffic on that TG carried on that site.

True! I also forgot that they use local county police dispatch instead of their D6 dispatches.
