Thanks for linking my video. I took that at work since we share the same building as the Post. We interact very well and we get to see all the new toys they get the day they get them :)..

Makes us jealous.

Forget about tradtion or the LED's in the bubble or the cost saving.

It looks rediculous.

If your going to make a really dumb comment at least try to spell it right

RIDICULOUS is the correct spelling. Spelling it wrong just makes your sensless post even more useless

Typos are a fact of life buddy... dont take me not liking the bubble personally. I'll try and spell things better next time for ya since you're perfect and have never made a typo.

Can you honestly say that you think that that stupid bubble is more effective than a normal lightbar which would produce more lights, more patterns, more options, and a nicer look?
That's foolish.

And what makes my comment dumb if its a fact?

The bubble is inefficient, and could get someone hurt. What kind of warning is that!? Is it going to take a cruiser getting rear-ended during a TS for you to agree?

I hate that stupid bubble with a passion. Any agency that focuses more on tradition than public safety is Stupid, with a capital S.

The old ones with the sealed beams? An emphatic YES, without a doubt. I've seen the old style for around 5 miles while driving on parts of I-75 up north. You'll never see any LED that far. I can't comment on the new LED version since I haven't seen one in operation in person.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the LEDs, especially in daylight. Fancy isn't always better.

That said, I found an old 35mm slide taken at a DPD funeral in '81 or '82. This is one of my favorite cars for the look, even if it didn't have the best performance.

I agree!! Let's forget about tradition and focus on safety, or would that make too much sense? There are plenty of sleek LED bars out there that would look nice on a MSP vehicle.

Besides the safety issues, it just seems odd to have such a nice, top-of-the-line charger, nicely painted and everything..... with a stupid freakin bubbble on top.

I mean, come on...

When departments want tradition over safety they are making a dangerous call that is bound to blow up in their face sooner or later.
To all you old fasion folk that like the bubble and are stuck in your ways, good for you, but if you ask ANY other department or nearly anyone from out-of-state, they'd tell you that MSP needs to get out of the 1920's and get up to speed with modern technology.'

And thats not even taking the safety issue into play.

Apparently you're missing all the parts where testing, research and real-life experience outweigh your opinion.

I'm talking from the standpoint of a public safety official from out-of-state.... And with my experiece, that stupid bubble is not sufficient. Period.

Any test you show is irrelevent. We can keep fighting and I dont mind doing that, but either way, I think what I think.

**** Tradition.

Well if you have seen the cars first hand... They have more than enough other lighting to make up for the one on the roof.

If you had ever driven up on an accident or other scene where 4 or 5 MSP Troopers are with their beacons running, you'd have a different opinion. They, without a doubt would have gotten your attention better than any other warning light system out there.

Again, I can't speak for the new LED version. This whole debate may be moot if they don't have the same punch as the sealed beam units.

Having seen the MSP lights in action (Both LED and the old rotators), Id definitely say they are effective. As many people have said, You can be 3 miles down the highway and spot a trooper on a traffic stop in the daytime with that bubble. Same with the new LED bubble...that puts out an intense flicker of light. With the bubble, rear deck lights, and alternating backup and break lights...there's no reason at all that you should not see a trooper.

And as far as how they look...that's nothing but opinion. I love the way MSP cars look. They are very unique, which makes them awesome from my standpoint.

I attached an image from the MDOT traffic cams of a trooper with the LED bubble. Id say that's plenty bright enough and should catch the attention of motorists.

This all reminds me of the California light (amber) and their requirement for all units statewide to be black & whites. Really no reason for either except 'tradition'.

For your information since you seem all knowing on LED's and Halogen lighting for Emergency Vehicles.

The leds in that bubble are capable of 20+ patterns and 2 brightness settings. Brightness can be control from the Cencom (When MSP Decides to go to them) from inside the car.

The LED's in use are a Whelen product, and the placement of said LED's was done locally by a guy I know very well.

The OLD Par 36 bulb wasn't bad when used with the old Spitfire lense as that bulb was/is used at airpoirts for landing lights.

Ever seen LED's in thick fog? I have and they don't fair for crap. The old Par 36 cut through the fog when hidden under the old spitfire lense.

So your theory is off base and your comments while your opinion are just that opinion, not fact and not well accepted on this page. You said your piece now move along.

Pennsylvania State Police had a single beacon on top for a long time. The last few years they had them they were accompanied by additional brake lights on the roof. For the most part the beacon was a strobe light, sometimes in daylight you couldn't see it very well but at night you always knew it was a state trooper. I remember seeing the first PSP car without them in a PSP patrolled area and thought "who was that". I always thought the single beacon and roof brake lights looked more authoritative.

Here's a few shots of the old along with a couple of the new. In the one PSP parking lot shot you can see both still in use. (note a couple of these photo's are of a restored PSP car but nonetheless true to how they looked)
