I can't think of any time where I have NOT had multiple radios at any of my three primary listening posts (truck, home office or garage workshop).

One radio is to listen to fire stuff, another for police stuff and the third for general catch-all scanning.

Of course I've been in the hobby for a number of years. I've only had one scanner to go bad. Any other time a new scanner was purchased because of new features or improvements such as dealing with simulcast. I hang on to the old ones and find some useful purpose for them.

I used to have two scanners: a table-top with a nice bright LED readout and convenient (i.e. larger) keypad on the front on my nightstand--the perfect set-up for scanning while I had insomnia (I didn't have to turn on any lights to see what's going on) and then a portable (with LCD readout) so I had a scanner to take with me. It was just a matter of convenience. (Although with the analog signals going away here in the Chicago area, things've gotten so quiet I can't justify a second scanner any more...)

Thanks for the compliments, folks. I have moved multiple times during my career and have lived in large metro areas (NYC, Atlanta) and a few smaller places (Bainbridge, GA, Newnan, GA). My rationale for setting up multiple scanners has always included the market I lived in. That is, larger metro areas have more emergency agencies, therefore, more scanner traffic. The smaller towns, as a rule, were much less active and 1-2 scanners might be sufficient to hear most of the traffic. Of course, regardless of where you live, if you have multiple scanners, it's fun to use what you have. You can always find ways to use them all for different purposes.

As others have already posted here I also use multiple scanners so that I don't miss anything. Each of my base scanners are programmed identically with various PD, FD, EMS, aviation, and railroad lists, however each one is dedicated to a specific service, or agency. The mobile in my car is programmed identically to my base scanners except that I also have a list of PD/FD/EMS agencies programmed that are along the route I take to and from work. Usually the mobile is always scanning that list. I have one handheld that is programmed with railroad frequencies for when I'm doing my rail photography. My other handheld gets programmed with whatever I might feel like listening to at that particular time.

You can never go wrong having too many radios!

I have the same things programmed into all of mine, at least the things that can be. Most people who do this tend to lock out certain frequencies that overlap for everyday listening. I don't, I leave them all open, even the systems that overlap. If I am home and actively listening, I can easily flip one of them to scan onward so that I don't miss any simultaneous transmissions on different systems.

If I am not home then it doesn't matter. I have my trusty BCD325P2 with me anywhere I go mobile.

Ain't that the truth! I just picked up a Pro-94 for free. The owner got rid of it because it doesn't support rebanding, I assume.

Me? I'm loading it up with DNR & USFS because we're entering brush fire season. I'll also have a bank for public works crews & some utility companies to be prepared for the rainy (& maybe snowy) season.

One man's trash is indeed another man's treasure.
