old police cars sell cheap at auction for a reason. most of the time they are not put up for auction until they are worn slap out. good for running around town, but don't trust them on long trips!

i am surprised they did not remove the whole console when it was decommissioned, around here they even take the spotlights off if they still work.

Yes its actually a great car it only had 65,000 miles on it when I got it, last year. The spot lights work well! I went to Ford when I got it and they tuned it up, I also got a Trans flush and new tires for it.

It sounds like you got yourself a P71 that may have missed the random abuse cops put them through-you should see how SFPD dogs those poor cars:( they actually drive them like they stole them:D I personally would never own a P71 because at least around here, all you see driving them are thugs or wannabe's with the spots foreward-so there's that stigma attached. Shame though, because the car is such a diehard public servant-cops, taxis, emergency services etc.
Too bad Ford discontinued the sale of it to the public-it really was a reliable family car too.

Yes this car came from a VERY small town in Michigan and wasn't used that much. It only has 358 hours of idling on it. Some of the other cars at the auction had over two thousand hours on them!

I have an 06 CVPI with 59K miles and 5xx idle hours

Nice car but the set up is awful. I am sure it will look much better once the faceplates come in for the real console.

yeah around here a car with that low idling hours would still be either the Chief's or one of the Captain's cars!

There's a lot to be said for a "low profile ride".

Yes it makes a great sky warn car! I have a Vertex 4204 VHF commercial radio and a Yeasu 2900 HAM UHF 440 radio in it. I also will be installing an laptop mount when it warms up, its to cold right now for me to do any work on it.

cause they are cheap and strong if you get a good one. you just have to pick carefully and know what kind of shape they are in. around here the city sells them for about 250-500.00, could probably get more for scrap but the law is they must be auctioned. and the ones here are usually best suited for the scrap heap. as is obvious from this thread though, other areas let them go much sooner and in better shape.

Considering that at my place of employment...within my divison we had three go in the four months, my buddy who has a retired/lightly used one go, and when you talk to fleet and its a known problem....

Honestly I don't have the information at my hands on what typically causes it, but it is a known problem on the 4.6 engines. I'm sure if you look up cvpi.net (or whatever its called) there are a few threads about the issue.

If you want to push trees out of the way with a push bumper, have at it. I prefer DPW to cut trees out of my way... however depending on what make/model of push bumper you have, you may just be damaging it or your car. Not all push bumpers are rated for the same service (frame mounted, ABS friendly, ramming rods, etc).

I forget what we had at one point, but it was determined by testing that:

1-Frame mounted that we bought was not nessesarly air bag friendly (fail to deploy when in Fords specs)
2-Would go through sheet metal when involved in a broadside or similar angle accident (think THRU a passenger door and severly injuring the occupants).

Oh, and not to keep this thread going south too much longer...

Buying a used CVPI (or any other fleet vehicle) is a complete crap shoot. Some will last forever, some will not. Consider this when you are looking at purchasing one:

Is it a city vehicle?
Used in a metro area?
Highway Patrol/State Police?
Takehome/perm assigned vehicle?
Police service, town service, fire service?

Would you on a daily basis start up your personal car in cold weather, stop on the gas without concern for the vehicle reliabilty? Etc etc etc.

Each question is pointed towards what kind of vehicle you MAY end up with. As a general rule, fire vehicles and highway vehicles (especially takehome/assigned) will be your best bet. Lower miles for fire, higher for highway. However, they also tend to not be beat on as much. Highway cars though will see much higher RPMs + speed (average and sustained) but again...tend to fair better than a city pool car.

Then think about the agency budget. How much deferred PM is being done? I bet you that oil changes and other line items are being streched out longer than what the OEM recommends.
