.....only NASCAR itself is going digital.......so really, nothing will change......you can still listen to whichever teams you want....no problem......you do not need a digital scanner...........

Well it does change as some of us DO monitor ALL of NASCAR's channels, to some it may not mean much, but to others not having access to those channels makes their jobs harder.

Official Statement from Racing Electronics

NASCAR is utilizing Digital radios however, The Race Control and Qualifying time channels will still be broadcasted in Analog for the teams and fans to monitor. We currently have many teams using digital communication as well, however they have primarily replaced hard wired intercom systems that were not capable of monitoring anyway. This communication is primarily between engineers, shock engineers and tire specialists. All communication between the car, crew chief and spotters is and always will be broadcast in Analog so as to allow fans, teams and NASCAR to monitor each others communication. Current NASCAR rules do NOT allow the teams to use digital radios in the cars on track at any time. Furthermore, there are no plans for the teams to migrate to any NEXTEL/SPRINT/ALLTELL Direct Connect style system.

Not a Spokesman

Considering that I have been doing this for 18 years, and personally handle close to 70% of the Sprint Cup Series Teams, I can tell you that my statement is 100% accurate. We work closely with both Racing Radios and NASCAR. There is nothing more to add to this rumor. NASCAR specifically bans digital comunication between driver and crew.

There have been a couple of stements in addition to mine that answer this rumor very clearly.

I would be more than happy to answer any further questions in regard to team communication.

Well MikeH, IF you had paid attention I spelled it ourt in the original post that it was JUSTthe officials and that race & safety/scoring were not affected (depends on source as to which it is safety or scoring) you wouldn't have jumped to "boycott", I said nothing of the drivers just the officials. Pay attention t what is written before jumping to conclusions.

Alright folks, calm down. No sense picking on the NASCAR fans that have no phone, electricity or water, which I'd guess is a considerable amount.

That was probably more true 15 years ago than now. If you looked at NASCAR fan demographics you'd probably be surprised at income and education levels. It's no longer just a southern hillbilly sport.

Hillbillies or not, getting worked up over not being able to monitor these "hard-wired intercoms" which have "moved to digital" is hilarious. 4pages worth of griping and speculation just to come to the conclusion that in all actuality nothing has changed.

Maybe i'm the only one who finds humor in this

Here is the lo-down from the Atlanta Motor Speedway (where I was all day Friday):

ALL Cup, Nationwide and Craftsman Series communication are in ANALOG! NASCAR Ch 1 and 5 are both ANALOG! If NASCAR is using some frequencies that are digital, I did not notice them.

Jeff Gordon was heard in ANALOG on 467.0625 with ctcss 225.7. I hope people will now stop kicking the dead horse!

I don't disagree about the fan demographics, but I think the current marketing schemes of NASCAR have completely dumbed down the sport.

They (NASCAR) have OVER commercialized everything to the point where people are not at all suprised that NASCAR would force all fans to buy NEXTEL or some other proprietary licensed radio system exclusively licensed to NASCAR.
[case in point...this thread and all of its wild responses]

Me personally I gave up on watching NASCAR when the announcer felt compelled to repeatedly explain what a "tachometer" was, as if it was some amazing piece of modern technology that was revolutionizing racing around the world. Even worse, the current TV coverage seems to be focused on creating fake reality-show-like exagerated drama between drivers to keep fans entertained.

What ever happened to racing just being racing!! IMO the Hillbilly days were much better racing.

sorry for the rant....

But the coverage in HD can't be beat. Fox can drop that gopher cam it's a gimmick that makes no real sense.

Obviously you have no proof to back up what you are saying. Either show the proof or stop passing on the rumors and lies. Telling us to call NASCAR is just a stupid response and only proves further that you really don't have a clue.

You forgot about Toyota. When NASCAR let Toyota in that really ended my interest in the sport.

from a true redneck.....

You do realize there are more NASCAR approved Toyota models(Tundra, Camry) built in the good old US of A(Texas, Indiana, and Kentucky) than there are Chevy's(Impala, Monte Carlo, Grand Prix,) and Dodges(Intrepid, Avenger, Charger), all built in Canada, and Ford's(The Fusion is built in Mexico)...

Toyota's increased presence in NASCAR is about the only thing they've done lately that KEEPS me interested.

About all that is in/on a NASCAR car these days is just the name. Look at all of the car bodys out there. They are all the same. Motor, transmission, drivetrain, interior, etc., are all built by the teams. Yes, the teams do get tech support from Ford, Toyota, etc., but that's about all you get with them.

Demographics? For all you name callers, when was the last time you went to a NASCAR race? Yes, there are the drunken rednecks that show up, but more and more are you getting family groups, white collar workers, blacks and others. Some of the people I go to the race with are - manager with AT&T, EE at Georgia Tech, IT at IBM, plus myself a retired manager at AT&T. Not your typical rednecks.

I agree that I enjoyed the races back in the day when you ran a car that was a stock car from the dealership and you modified the engine. Today's racing is a safe ride for all drivers. Even though I don't want to see it (and neither will most of the fans), but I can see the day when NASCAR builds all the cars and the teams draw numbers to see which one they get and then they can take it to their paint shop to put on their graphics. Kinda like IROC. That way, everyone is equal.

Just the kind of thing I'd ecpect from someone too lazy to pick up a phone and dial the number I gave you for NASCARS Director of Communications-Competition. The proof IS there if you'd call him. Obviously you have a phone. Telling you to call them is the only YOU would believe it, hearing it straight from NASCAR, since you won't listen to the person from Racing Radios....

Make the call.... I'm sure you could take five minutes out of your day.....
