Also keep in mind there will be a transition at some point to digital SHP talkgroups which are different than the current analog talkgroups. They are listed in the database of course.

Here is the audio file of the cut-over announcement made on Low Band Channel 10 the day they moved to the new center. The last part is a transmission that occurred about a minute after the first announcement. The first part of the later transmission was cut off but it sounds like someone signing off the low band station at the Sauratown transmitter site.

Good catch Wes. I couldn't quite pick up what the first half of that last transmission was even with headphones on.
I'll update you guys with what info I find out tomorrow

Today I saw an E4 officer outside his car carrying an 800 radio but couldn't tell if it was digital or not. The car still had it's low band antenna. I'm wondering if all of District E will go to VIPER at once, or will it be county by county as the county themselves implement the system so they can communicate with SHP?

It is my understanding that most cars have a Low Band mobile and the trooper carries an 800 portable as minimum equipment. I know some E-5 troopers who still have VHF portables and a cross band repeater in their cars, but I don't know what the schedule is to phase out the VHF mobile repeaters. I'm aware that certain areas of the state have long phased out the VHF equipment with the advent of increased 800 coverage. In my area there are still too many dead spots on 800 for me to believe the Low Band mobile radios are going away any time soon.

I'd venture to say that anywhere in the US Highway 321 corrider and points west would be the last to switch fully to 800 in their respective county and VIPER statewide. I'm sure there are a lot of dead spots for 800 in your area, Wes, and that's where the cross band repeaters would come in handy. What are the closest SHP tower sites in your area?
I reside in the great county of Yadkin and we only have one site in our county at present which is at the I-77 Rest Area just south of Hwy 421/I-77 interchange. This is a good addition to the I-77 corridor but does little for the county VIPER users due to it being nearly in the extreme southwest corner of the county. I've heard there are plans for a second site at the county landfill which is a fairly central location in the county.
Sauratown dominates around here so it will take a strong local site to beat out that signal.

After posting that I noticed NOAA WX is transmitting from Sauratown on 162.425 this morning. I don't know if this is a temporary change or permanent one.

Thanks! I am also aware of the tx site at the rest area off I77 near US 421. I didn't know that there was no other site in Yadkin. It would seem that they would want more than just those two sites up there to cover the entire county. That lowband signal from Sauratown has got to be strong. It can easily be picked up here in Rowan.
The Elkins site covers northern Yadkin fairly good doesn't it??? At least when I am through there it seems to be adequate....
Elkin does ok in the Northwest corner of the county as far east as Boonville and as far south as I-77/Hwy 21, but is fairly weak any further east and south. Of course this should marginally better on actual 800 MHz radios in lieu of the BCD396XT that I'm using.

It looks as if Uniden or any other scanner manufacturer would make an rubber ducky antenna just as good, if not better, than an actual 800 Mhz two-way radio. After all, it would just be to receive and never to transmit.

Good catch on the Sauratown sign-off, it was sad to hear that recording, I've been listening since 1985 when we first moved to this area close enough to hear the NCSHP, actually from Williamston to Asheville, via 42 Mhz. At the end of that recording, as it sounds to me, the dispatcher or person was saying "This is retiree Frank (somebody) signing off Sauratown Mountain WGC581." VIPER (from Sauratown) is loud and proud across the line, especially if you use a 800mhz yagi, as I do. Sauratown is usually 3 bars on my 996T. Thanks again for the audio clip.

Wes (fcfd988) is actually the one that caught the recording, I just commented on his posting of it. He doesn't live to far from Sauratown. I actually live in Salisbury where Troop E headquarters is.
I could always hear Sauratown loud & clear down here too.

Forgive me, but I must have missed something somewhere along the line. Am I reading that they discontinued SHP's lowband tx singal from Sauratown altogether?
