Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, I bought a pre-programmed Uniden scanner model BCD536 HP p25 series 2. I reside within Pennington County SD 57703. I bought this scanner to replace my other one as all PD,Sheriff, ems & fire went to P25 series 2 and mine wouldn’t work. After getting this pre-programmed scanner I’m not picking up anything except for the occasional Pennington County Fire (fire ground) and that’s it. I know there isn’t encryption on main channels and a neighbor still has it coming through on his scanner. Any ideas? Am I missing a setting?

Is your neighbor still using the Motorola system or has switched to the new P25 system? Is your neighbor using conventional frequencies also?

Using the p25 system, he took his to the PD and had a guy do it there as he’s a reserve officer, yes, I asked if he would do mine and said he can’t as I’m not a officer.

Welcome to the RR forums. Is the South Dakota State Radio System the system in question & if so, what site on the system are you monitoring? The zip code you entered comes back to Rapid City & if this is accurate, the database indicates the Rapid City cells are deprecated (no longer in use). Try monitoring the next closest sites (perhaps 020 or 049?) You'll also want to check to ensure the service types (reference "tag" column per talkgroup table) corresponding to the talkgroups you want to monitor are turned on & that the system itself is set to monitor "on": On scanner, press MENU > SET SCAN SELECTION (E) > SELECT LISTS TO MONITOR (E) > Scroll to select the favorites list containing the system and press "E" to set it to "On". If all else fails I'd suggest posting your Uniden Sentinel .hpe export as an attachment on this thread, directions here so someone can take a look at your programming

Since you said that you had it pre-programmed and the 325P2 should be able to receive Phase II with no incryption in your area, I would have to concur that you probably have the service types unchecked. One of the best reasons supporting that you learn how to program it yourself. I prefer to use Sentinel software (over manual programming) as I can see it in black and white and be able to save, backup & restore favorites whenever I like or whenever I need to.

Lastly, I'm not knocking police at all but most don't like ordinary folks to be able to monitor their transmissions because if you can hear it, so can the criminals!!!

I talked to a individual at state radio that I know, and he told me everything switched here to P25 simulcast, he said everything pretty much stayed the same just the system went to 9600 baud (not sure what that means) and simulcast. I’ve went through scanner and checked talkgroups are turned on that I want to listen to.

OP has a BCD536HP. Service types could be an issue. The BCD325P2 does not use service types.

I went through what was mentioned on service types, all the ones I want to listen to are checked. Here’s the deal I’m an old man, I’ve been listening to scanners since 70’s and technology has gone way too far for me to comprehend or follow along. When I checked locally I was told everything stayed pretty much the same as channels go, they just went to p25 simulcast is what it is. I’m wondering if radio reference just doesn’t have the correct talkgroups and frequencies yet? When you get into p25 simulcast and digital I’m way lost!!! I wish there was a scanner for dummy’s book 101 cause I don’t even understand the diff from this to the old crystals I use to put into the scanner for diff frequencies if some of you can remember them times.

Try updating your master HPDB in the sentinel software and rebuild your favorites list. The database was just undated this week. The previous database was missing the Rapid City simulcast frequencies. Then upload the updated favorites list to your scanner. Make sure you use the Pennington County P25 list. My Home Patrol 1 is working just fine (so far) on the new p25 system here in Rapid City.
