Visitors to the White Mountain National Forest enjoy:
1200 miles of hiking trails, 400 miles of snowmobile trails, 160 miles of the Appalachian Trail, 23 developed campgrounds, 6 ski touring areas, and 4 alpine ski areas. There are six Congressionally designated wilderness areas totaling 149,500 acres. Water: Protecting and ensuring the quality of water resources is a priority. The forest continuously restores and revitalizes the vast water resources, including: 12,000 acres of wetlands, 4,750 miles of streams, 67 lakes and 35 watersheds.
The White Mountain National Forest Supervisors Office is in Campton, NH. There are 3 Ranger Districts: the Androscoggin in Gorham, NH: the Pemigewasset in Campton, NH (co located with the Supervisors Office); and the Saco in Conway, NH. Dispatching is provided by the Northeastern Interagency Coordination Center located in the Forest Supervisor Office in Campton. This center identifies as "Campton" on the radio.
This center provides services to federal and state agencies in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New York. It is part of the Northeastern Forest Fire Protection Commission, which also includes several Canadian Provinces. It provides services to the White Mountain and Green Mountain National Forests, the National Park Service and Bureau of Indian Affairs in all seven states, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife's Region 5. Even the Fire Department of the City of New York is a member of the compact, but has its own dispatching. Thus, this is a complex dispatch center.
