Nothing like spending taxpayer money so crossing guard has a TDMA portable....all in the name of interoperability of course.

Infastructure is expensive! Why build out a duplicate system so you can buy a couple cheaper subscriber units.

Let’s say 10 crossing guards and we’ll use a conservative $3000 on a APX. Thats $30,000. I could give them a conventional system and 10 analog portable for 75% of that easily. Infrastructure ? A simplex base station on top of the town/village hall would suffice. Why do you think many agencies/Counties are putting local government like DPW on DMR ? There is no logical reason to have them using an APX.

I agree. When Verona had its own EDACS system, every crossing guard in town was issued an MRK2 portable. They hardly ever used them. Now that we’re on NJICS, the crossing guards use their own cellphones if they need to make a report.

I noticed 851.2625 is also one of Union County simulcast channels, it seems to be one of the data channel of that simulcast cell.

Will be submitting it to the database.

All of the County EDACS frequencies were folding into the Union County Simulcast.

You can’t just smack a radio on top of a building and call it good. Coverage engineering, Freq coordination, FCC Licensing, structural analysis, tower work, antennas, feedline, lightning protection, filters plus routine maintenance and repairing any problems. You can get low end TDMA portables for under your 3000 dollar mark.

Crossing guards+cell phone= no radio needed

What do you think PD, Fire and EMS was using before the jump to NJICS. Ever think that all that is still there ?

Oh and thank you for the lesson about what it takes to get a system up and running. Rolleyes

Good point our old VHF system is still just sitting there sucking up electricity. I believe we are using these old repeaters for the community response team, pretty much so they can learn how to use and talk on a radio.

That’s my point. One of my old PDs switched to EDACS when it first came out from our VHF repeater. That repeater hasn’t been used for over 20 years. However, it’s still in the consoles, the PD cars still have it (as they have VHF radios to monitor Fire/EMS/NYSP, etc.) and it’s putting out 100 watts on top of a mountain. All the infrastructure, licensing, etc is already in place. Very easy to buy some Kenwood portables and they could easy talk to each other, have a direct line to police dispatch, the cars...all for a minimal cost of a cheap analog subscriber.

Even Union Twp....they were using EDACS. Take one of those GE radios from the decommissioned EDACS and set up a simplex Base on an existing frequency.

The same can be said for many other departments, not just crossing guards so if you would rather your tax dollars go to buy them all a cell phone then so be it.

I would guess the Tband EDACS....Rolleyes
Glad I could help the expert out.
Oh, and the crossing guards are technically part of the police department.

No don’t really need to buy them phones either, they can use their own and write it off. I understand the issues a crossing guard can have that may require them to need a radio I’m just saying their probably isn’t a need to buy an expensive portable for them all and their is likely a less expensive way to give them a line of communication in an emergency.

If y'all feel so strongly, there's some great houses for sale in Union that you could purchase, then run for Township Committee.

So any developments on the NJICS?

Literally was just typing up the same thing; let's move on.

8080 was active again on the Martinsville tower; key ups only. Not sure if it has anything to do with Site 21 testing; have not seen that online in almost a month.
