Guys,

Following up on the Rutgers site discussion, I got a submission this morning requesting that the site be renamed to the 'New Brunswick Simulcast' with a range increase, seeing that the site is now broadcasting in LSM mode.

Opinions? The submitter points to the ULS documents now showing a definite change to this site. I'm inclined to accept this request.

I'm no expert on this my any means, but when I use search on the Rutgers site, I mostly hear Med Central, New Brunswick FD and Rutgers (E) stuff. I'm NOT getting any of the statewide stuff (i.e. NJ Park PD). For that I have to use either the Bordentown or Hunterdon site. Not sure if that helps?

I concur. GTR8000 originally had this I believe. Observed the site number now single digit and single digits on the system are simulcast. I would accept the request. ULS documents? Do we have the other simulcast site locations? This would mean a map change in the RR Wiki.

The ULS documents are actually from 2014, and thus do not show any new information about Site 8. They simply refer to the original Site 29 as "New Brunswick" while mentioning nothing about a simulcast cell (as expected). Similarly, CAPRAD still refers to the original standalone Site 29 as "State of NJ Clothier Hall IR". In other words, there is nothing new in the ULS filing for the WPTZ794 license.

The location of other subsites for Site 8 has yet to be determined.

I would check out the following nearby locations where the state has existing 800/microwave infrastructure.

East Brunswick - 40.42464, -74.38728
South Amboy - 40.49028, -74.28889
Woodbridge - 40.53280, -74.29836

So let me do what Zero likes to do........If you are near these locations check to see if Site 8 is simulcasting at the coordinates GTR8000 posted. I will make it easy.

East Brunswick_ Water Tank near Brunswick Square Mall
South Amboy_Large lattice tower near main street
Woodbridge_Tower near GSP and Rt9

since Millburn PD is the first PD in Essex County to go Full Time E , wondering what the criteria is and thinking for this move? Any idea?

Encryption, weather AES or otherwise, is a matter of money and equipment. Any agency can employ this option, it’s just a matter of money and if they want it or not.

I saw the change in the database (ref: former Rutgers site now being New Brunswick Simulcast).
So does this mean we can can expect to hear more radio traffic (i.e statewide talkgroups) on it now?

Not necessarily; TBD.

PS - As I posted previously, that "New Brunswick" name was for the original Rutgers standalone site. It's questionable as to whether that name is appropriate for the newly created simulcast site, but I guess it is what it is for the time being.

The NJICS thread dates back to 2011 and is approaching 200 pages. Over in the Michigan group they have the State system by year. So something like “NJICS 2020 Sites and Talkgroups”. Opens and closes each year.Thoughts? Take a look.

The skinny on the Rutgers site change:

The site was formerly a free-standing ASR, and over the time it was on the air, there were increasing instances of subscriber units roaming off the site to other sites (Telegraph Hill, etc).

Rutgers made the decision to upgrade the site to a full simulcast cell. The second site in that cell is in Mountainside. Those in western Union County should be able to receive that site with a minimal antenna on their scanners, and I'd like those that can confirm to chime-in when they have time.

The Union County simulcast has a site in watchung which I received full signal strength here along Route 78 in Western Union County and Somerset County... However I do not receive the Rutgers New Brunswick simulcast or its mountainside transmitter site at all at these locations... Are you sure there is a mountainside transmitter associated with the New Brunswick site?

Soooo Mountainside? That would make 2 different Simulcast sites in Mountainside, Union AND Site 8? I am around those parts a couple times a week, I will check it out. If it is in Mountainside the obvious place to look is where a MW (thanks GTR) path exists. I will start there. Contrary to Richies post I get plenty of Rutgers signal. Ritchie,Mountainside and Watchung are very very different from a path perspective as the ridgeline blocks much signal out to the west from Mountainside. Stay tuned.

I had not gotten confirmation as to wether Mountainside is on the air, or still under construction.

With the sheer volume of traffic on the Union County simulcast, the Mountainside site will allow the users that are dispatched by MVECC to shed some of the load off Union by being on a neighboring site (my assumption).
