I also purchased the Eneloop package at Costco. According to the package, the charger does charge individual cells. There are 4 LEDs that light when charging and turn off individually as the cell finishes charging.

Yes we both got the same thing. I got it when it was 23.00 for everything. I think this is good enough. The charger seems fine. Maybe getting those other batteries we mentioned above and using this charger would be sufficient. The 3 factory 2300 AA batteries I put in last Sunday and today they needed charging as the warning sound came on. So that gives an idea how long they last and this is monitoring in the car for 45 minutes a day estimated.
I am putting in the Enloops in today and will see how long the charge lasts with those the way I use the scanner. If all is correct these probably won't last as long given the same amount of time I monitor in the car.

I bought a Eneloops charger that came with 10AA and 4AAA. The charger only charges at one rate unless it's automatic.
The batteries that came with scanner are 2300.
The Eneloops are 1900.
Does this mean that the 2300 batteries will last longer between charges over the Eneloops that are 1900?

The green 2300mAh batteries, after cycle ran.

I knew they looked familiar. The 3 green batteries that came with the scanner are actually rebadged GPAA2300 GP batteries. Very good batteries. Discharge capacity was around 2310mAh

Those batteries are made in China. Does this influence the price of the cost of these?
The Lithium AA Energizer batteries (not rechargeable) are made in Singapore -Expensive

Eneloops made by Panasonic IN Japan.

More likely. the could have them on clearance, as seen them usually go for more. GP has done well over the years and can handle high current devices well. They are not bad. The Eneloops are still the best and LSD type, so they hold their charge longer without having to worry about recharging again, due to sitting, when you want to use them.

That is a good price and charger has individual management - delta V control, so will work fine.

Scanners draw more power due to vocoder needed for digital voice decode using CPU to follow truck systems and various other reason, I can't get into in this thread. Let just say new generation of scanners also have a computer built in to it to follow trucking system and various other tasks that quite complex, then have to decode p25, it not like the old analog scanners that just run though your banks. Plus scanners are niche market, so a manufacturer not going to invest to much time and cost in research and development, to put the best DC-to DC converters and power management system and optimize various other components and retool the PCB board over and over again revising circuits. They won't make no money at that point and more likely take losses. If they did well in a mainstream market like most "I" products and sold out within 24 hours, of them being released, people standing in line around the corner for them, it would be a different story.

The news media uses the same equipment/scanners we get?

A 32 GB card in your GRE/Whistler will not be faster by its nature compared to a 4 GB card. It will take longer to boot up .. but the only way you will see any "fastness" difference is if it is a faster class card. Bigger does not mean necessarily faster ... except at Costco.:lol:

Costco sells the SanDisc 32 GB 80KB Class 10 memory chip for $39.95 I have seen SanDisc 32 GB 95 KB Class 10 memory chips for sale at other places for $39.95

WS1080

just got my WS1080 at the Hamvention. Had a bad time with the driver in Win8.1. Once I got past that I did an update all and put in my zip code it started receiving the Ohio MARCS traffic like a champ! Cool little radio indeed! I am simply delighted with how well it receives the digital system.

What kind of batteries and how many of them does this scanner run on?

This is one of the reasons I did not buy the 436, a radio of this size and display and only use 3 AA.
How about the great idea to come out with a new phase 2 handheld (325p2) that only has 2 AA batteries?

The 396xt does ok on just 3 but is not trying to drive a big screen.

I have 4 AA NiMH batts - Panasonic Enloop w/ charger.
The first pass the radio ate the Batts. Now they are fully discharged and I am going to retest on a full charge.

Regarding the faded serial number I put scotch tape over all my equipment's serial numbers
