ALBANY, N.Y. (January 15, 2009) - The New York State Chief Information Officer and Office for Technology (CIO/OFT) today announced that M/A-COM Inc., the vendor awarded the contract to build the statewide wireless network (SWN), has failed to deliver a satisfactory and acceptable public safety communications network and is in default of the contract. As a result, the State has exercised its right to terminate the contract for cause and presented a demand notice for the payment of a $50 Million Standby Letter of Credit to the State (SLOC) without delay.

If only Oakland, Co (MI) did the same, but they are in too deep now... while every county around it upgraded successfully to the MPSCS after they decided to do opensky, and years before they will even have it up and running completely.

MA/CRAP stinks

Stick a fork in them. M/A-Com Critical Communications is DONE.

Really, I think that's the most probable result, given the state of the economy as well.

This economy is very unkind to those who don't deliver a quality product that WORKS RELIABLY and at
a fair price.

Hmm.. I wonder how that might affect M/A-COM's bid(s) for my province's province-wide 700MHz P25 system...

(please, please?)

For some reason the post-termination report says they have "success" on achieving P25 conventional links. How they define "success" is totally up in the air!

I think my comment was misunderstood. My province is inviting Motorola and M/A-COM to bid on a province-wide P25 trunk system. I'm a Batwing fanboy. :D

Downside, Motopoly.
This is true, and I don't particularly care for it, but at least Motorola can build out a system with relative success. M/A Com apparently can not, at least not an OpenSky system. Pennsylvania's statewide OpenSky system is now how many years behind schedule?

Has M/A Com had any success with a large system buildout? EDACS? P25? It seems we always hear about OpenSky failures. Maybe its just that OpenSky is a failure.

Keeping OpenSky out of the neighborhood.

All the missteps and failures and cost overruns and trials and tribulations of MA/COM trying to get OpenSky implemented in NY State are now well documented here on Radio Reference.

Why not present the information well documented here on this website to your provincial officials, the ones that O.K. the funding, showing how bad and faulty OpenSky has been in the many implentation attempts. And go on and on how great Moto's P-25 is, the system you WILL be able to hear. The same with the poster(s) in Florida and PA. You can stop OpenSky in its tracks, if you present well documented example after example of how OpenSky has failed. The elected officials and the local media will take heed to that.
Especially the newspapers. Let about 150,000 people read that your province wants to spend millions of dollars on a radio system that won't work in the States. Your Province deserves better! And there is more than enough material right here on Radio Reference to construct a clear and concise argument against OpenSky.

OpenSky failed in NY. But even if OpenSky had worked just fine, that’s not the point. We need to fight, fight, fight to get radio systems we CAN hear. We are Scanner Enthusiasts. It’s what we do. We can’t hear OpenSky. And we are taxpayers. And you may very well be pleasantly surprised to realize that the elected officials that decide what is spent on what will value your opinion on how millions of dollars are going to be spent.

EDACS lives on many (most?) U.S. Navy ships, and there are a number of successful EDACS systems in the U.S. I can't say the same about Opensky, although I HAVE seen demo's, and it worked quite well. Most of the EDACS and Opensky failures seem to be customer induced - N.Y. being no exception. I've worked with both Motorola and M/A-Com systems, and find they are different, but quite equal, when you get past the biases and propaganda. Actually, EDACS is a superior system to Motorola Type II, which was the contemporary system of the time. If that's a bias, it's born out of many years working with both.
