I noticed something odd today driving up 93 with an HT in the truck -- I was often hearing the Troop B dispatcher clearly answering units, but often didn't hear the trooper's side of things.

I'm curious if anyone knows how they have things set up. I can't imagine it's a simplex system. I see that, beyond Pack Monadnock, they're also licensed on Warner Hill and Blue Job. My best guess is this -- it's set up with voted receive, and only the "local" repeater carries the trooper's audio. The dispatcher's reply is either simulcast from all sites, or the dispatcher simply had a site closer to me selected than the trooper was coming in. (Since the troopers are listening in via something other than an HT inside a car, they could presumably hear the dispatcher fine.)

I suppose the inner workings don't matter a whole heck of a lot, but I'm curious if anyone has noticed the same thing, or understands exactly how the system is configured.

There may have been units on that were encrypted by mistake or intentionally. Typically, the system puts all traffic over all sites. I've also noticed some of the cruisers have exceptionally low audio.

Thanks! You were right about encryption -- I opened the squelch when I heard the dispatcher talking to a phantom unit, and sure enough, it was the garbled noise you get when listening to an encrypted signal. Thankfully, it's not super commonplace.

Troop B is a repeated radio system using a Motorola AstroTac 3000. There are three input locations. Primary transmitter is on Pack Monadnock.

Only Troop C, E, and two F zones are simulcast.
