Have you looked at the specs comparing the R8600 & the IC-R15 as far as VHF air goes, I am thinking the IC-R15 is far more sensitive in that band.

That will never happen. The R15 is over priced the way it is.
Everyone would like a cheaper price but it sounds about right to me.
I remember when the AOR 1000 came out, and for a couple years, it was the only handheld scanner that could receive UHF milair. It was $1,000+ and that was 20 years ago, I and many other air enthusiasts ponied up and got one.

It is obviously aimed at a niche market of folks, offers features and performance not found on other handhelds, so it will be hard to resist for anyone into air comms.

The Icom R6 does the same job with wider frequency coverage and no useless power guzzling display. It's also cheaper and takes AA batteries.

Why people waste money on overpriced gear I will never know.

Nice displays are a selling point for many [if not most] folks, plain jane numeric black & white lcds went out of style a decade + ago. Never heard or handled an R-6, I'm guessing the audio must be sub par. Looks like an ergonomic nightmare to me, but no doubt has impressive specs.

Dual receivers, record capabilities, faster scan speed, superior sensitivity… but other than that it’s the same.
Better receiver (and two of them at that), better audio, internal recording, Bluetooth, many more programming options, the much nicer display, easier to use...shall I go on? I own both the R-15 and the R-6, and while the R-6 is indeed cheaper, all it does is sit and collect dust because it's not even in the same league as the R-15...which means technically the R-6 is the waste of money, not the R-15.

Why people come here to crap on radios they don’t own I will never know
Oh yeah, it’s the internet. Duh.
Why hide behind a keyboard? If they're that upset, they should head over to Kirkland, WA or Mount Laurel, NJ with some picket signs and a megaphone to show them they mean business!

Don't think I am crapping on the R15. Just pointing out issues I think are right. No doubt its a great radio. Its a Icom. Icom makes great radios. Can answer why Icom did not include a waterfall display like whats on the 52A? Is basically the same radio without a few features. If Icom would have included that, I may have ponied up the money to get one. When I had the 52a, using the waterfall display was awesome.

I am extremely disappointed in this radio. Also the RTSystems software is full of bugs. I have 10 RTSystems programs and have programmed all my radios using their software. This was the worst experience I have had. The radio feels cheap, and is very hard to navigate. I have the following Icom radios, IC 7100, 5100, 51a+, 52, r30. So I do have some history with the brand. The r15 is the worst.

@prima19rider - Do you think it is worth $300? Would that be a fair price, or not even that? I prefer a keypad for direct frequency entry.

Can you elaborate how the radio feels cheap? I’m close to buying and would like to hear about the RY systems bugs as well. Thanks.

I can only compare it to the IC-2 and IC-R6 in terms of Icom radios and yes, it's different in terms of programming. I think if you give it some more time, you'll get the hang of it quickly.

And as for cheap, I'm not so sure.. feels to me on-par with build quality I find in the other small Icoms. What in particular do you find different on this one (thinking compared to the 51 and 52, which is resembles on the outside).

I do not own one but I currently own and have owned many Icoms and the one word I would not associate with them is cheap, either in cost or quality. Maybe I should buy one to check it out!😉
