Looking for suggestions to monitor New London/Waterford PD primarily. On a bit of a budget so if you could provide a few options it would be greatly appreciated. I've tried doing as much homework as I could and I believe these talkgroups are all digital trunked systems now so I know my options may be limited /: Just making sure I'm not missing anything or completely way off base with the types of scanners I should be pricing out. Thanks!

Just my 2 cents I have used my 325P2 on that system with great results, it is simulcast but I have never had any simulcast issues

Would something like either of these work?

I'd prefer a handheld tbh, but out of curiosity and for the purpose of continuing to educate myself here, what would you be asking for that?

Oh man...I'm off to a hot start aren't I 😓

my apologies sincerely, I'm (obviously) very new here but will remember that for the future.

G5 is a bit of overkill for the waterford system I have a Whistler 1040 handheld works perfect for the waterford/NL system at almost a third the price. This scanner will also get you the base’s system as well. The 1040 runs around 300$ and will only do the P25 P1 systems (also regular analog scanning as well) there is also a base version of this scanner which I have in my truck which works great as well. Also keep in mind waterford PD main is clear but encrypts their TAC channels while NLPD main and TAC is in the clear (makes no sense) for now. All fire depts are in the clear as well. You will also hear a patch from ELyme PD and FD over the waterford system but since it’s a analog patch into a digital system it sound pretty bad at times. All in all I think the 1040 would be your best bet.

Appreciate that. I actually just settled on setting my sights on a 1040 yesterday after basically researching this daily for the last few days now haha I think I might be able to get one at a VERY good price too so keeping my hopes up here! Thanks for the assurance! :)

For the time being, until you purchase your own scanner, you can listen to Waterford/New London on Broadcasify.com.

I monitor Wtfd/NL every day, their system is my immediate mutual aid along Rt 85.

They can be monitored with the older 996XT/396XT with ease. I have them in the 996P2 and Unication G5 now, but used the 996XT/396XT for years. You can also monitor Waterford Fire Dispatch on 33.94 PL 179.9

The system is 800mhz Phase I, but with much of the county law enforcement and other services moving to CLMRN, the 996P2 may be the better long term option to also monitor the 7-800 Phase II system.

While the Unication G5 is a good tool, you can only monitor one system at a time, whereas the 996P2 can monitor multiple systems at once.

One very good thing to monitor on the Wtfd/NL system is the law enforcement hotline, it is much clearer than the low band channel.

I only wish they all simulcasted the low band, which is why I like listening to the City of Hartford's hotline TG (while it lasts).
