• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi All, newbie to these forums and to ham radio. For my first radio I purchased a Wouxun KG-UV6X handheld along with the programming cable and software.

Managed to get the keyboard unlocked and the radio programmed for several local repeaters including the ctcss tones and correct offsets. The receive LED and strength graph indicate that signals are being received but there is no audio output. I've tried different squelch settings from 0 to 9 but still no audio.

I've tried every combination of settings without result. I haven't attempted transmitting until I get receiving working.

One of the local repeaters (FWARC.org) is at 147.040+ with ctcss of 103.5 Hz which is what I have the radio set to for channel 1. There is quite a bit of activity on this repeater in the evening and on weekends but I can't hear it. With the squelch set at "0" I can't hear anything even with the volume set at maximum, not even background noise.

Any suggestions or hints would be appreciated.

Thanks, Tom KG7CFC

Make sure you only have the PL set on the encode side. The decode should be left open.

That's a good starting point for troubleshooting. Many repeaters transmit the PL tone on the output, allowing you to use CTCSS and only hear the repeater when it's active and blocking out unwanted signals. If the repeater is one that doesn't transmit it's input PL tone and you have your PL decoder on, you won't hear anything. I would add this to your troubleshooting: If there is a repeater in your area that doesn't use a PL tone for access, but sure your radio is set to the correct frequency and offset, with no PL tone turned on, and see if you can hear that repeater. That will give you an idea if it's a PL issue or not.

One other trick I once used on a different radio, try plugging in a pair of headphones to the radio's headphone jack and see if you can hear anything on the headphones. It could be a speaker issue.

Welcome to the hobby and the "fun" of troubleshooting! :) Good luck.

Thanks to all for your replies. I've tried each of the suggestions but I'm still not getting any audio. The PL is set on xmit only, tried lisyening on the calling frequency (2m) with NO PL, and even tried a headset but nothing.

I know that the speaker works because I can tune to a commercial FM station (98.9MHz) and it sounds great but not on 2m or 70cm. At the time I ordered this radio fro Ham Radio Outlet I didn't know there was a "ham" version (KG-UV6D) that comes unlocked. My version is the commercial version and was locked as delivered.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks, Tom

Perhaps you pl encode tone does NOT match the required decode tone, as to what you state

in other words, are you at elast getting into the system?? turn ctcss off, and see if you hear anyone.. if YES, then it is set incorrectly
