To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello Guys!

I was recently able to get my hands on a NX-5700 and NX-5800BK2. I have the NX-5700 as the primary and NX-5800BK2 as the secondary. I went to set it up for dual rf deck programming today... but no good. I couldn't communicate with the NX-5800BK2, only the NX-5700. I tried a direct connection from my remote head to the deck -- still nothing. This is where I am lost.

Any help would be appreciated!

The software doesn't see both decks under the multidesk write. I set the dip switches correctly I believe... Head - all on. 1st Radio - 1st one off. 2nd radio - 3rd one off.

I can't seem to upload file here, probably too big. Do a Google search on "NX-5000 Multideck" and download the .pdf called "NX-5000 Multi Deck Configuration Setup". It looks like this 1648772842165.png

if it is not seeing deck 2, that means the kct-71m4 needs to flip flopped (180 it) check again with software.

Did you by chance enable the multi-deck on the 5800bk2 then write to it? Then hook it together?

I tried connecting the 5800bk2 directly to the remote head as if it was a 1-1 setup. It didn't boot....

What do you mean flip-flopped... it only goes in the port one way.

flip flop, mark one end #1, the other end #2, now reverse the cable connection. FLIP FLOP. number 2 should be on the 5700 bottom, and 1 on the 5800 top

Now, you say it did not power up on single head 1-1. That's a dead give away to 2 things. The KRK-15 ribbon is not
seated good, or the power is, in nice words, dead.

Crack the krk-15 back open and check you have the ribbon seated and the twin power leads connected.
Next crack the top off, remove the rubber seal, remove the 4 screws and check B+ on the protection diode and on the B+ terminals.

ITS looking for the second deck. This may be the time to hit it with the FW write!
PS; that means the head is being told there is a second deck
Next question, and this is not in any of the books or anywhere else but my school of hard knocks.

When you have both decks matted, you will see either FW ERROR, or something along that line, NO FEAR,
get your firmware (KFL) loaded with the latest FW, and write is to the head. Just hit write, the radios will auto FW MODE.
Need to do this to kick it into twin mode. That usually does it.

Hope this helps.
Let me know.

Good news it works! I re-seated the ribbon cable and on the KCT71 there is a black dot on one side but not the other... i put the black dot on the second deck side and it works!

However, the "no units found/available" is still there but only on deck 1. I wonder if I code plugged it wrong...

I did... it's still there. I'm calling kenwood tech to see what they say.

Did you run the firmware update or run TOOLS/Transceiver Information to see if the 5800 is responding now?

Both radios show up! They work.

I had written my code for 2 heads which gave me the "unit not found" error.

Copy, glad you found the error. Enjoy!
Latest FW is 4.52 which allows for ADP for P25 (free by the way)
Any other items, come back and hit us up or join our Viking / Kenwood users group on FB

One more question, since you seem to be in the know. Anyway to control the volume to my 2 separate speakers? I can only adjust both at the same time via the KCH-20R head.

INDIVIDUAL CONTROL no
however you can change it from 0 dbm down to -9 dbm UNSELECT audio
Others have made volume pots for each speaker off the back, just remember its 4ohm, 4 watt output if you do

Go to OPTION FEATURE 1, then click on OTHER or scroll to the bottom, there you can set the speaker settings.
USE DECK 1 as that is what the head will read as primary control,
