The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have been able to move my license back and forth between PC's, provided that I can deactiviate the license on the uninstall computer.
I did have a catastrophic failure with a laptop and had to call Kenwood since I couldn't deactivate that one.

Alright, situation is improving! This I can deal with. How long can you leave deactivated license in limbo before activating on another pc? I'll explain why if anyone wants to know otherwise I'll unkey and lurk.
You guys have saved me a lot of time and put me in a position to make an informed decision. Thanks for real...

I've been able to deactivate the software on my main desktop and then 2 seconds later re-activate it on my lapotp. I've also deactivated it on my laptop and then re-activated it the next day or two or three days later without issue. Should be available instantly as it communicates with Kenwood's licensing servers to deactivate/reactive the license.

I have a 2-tone question regarding the 5000 series. My X180's wait until the very end of the tone set before alerting, i know, doesn't seem like a big deal but i'm sure that others have noticed this. I was told in a old thread that this is normal for the older series Kenwood radios, however they added that the newer series (TK-x312, TK-x360) radios for example now come with a feature called "Short Decode". This allows the radio to alert the instant it decodes the 2-tone set much like a Minitor pager does, eliminating the 2.5 second delay that most Kenwood radios have prior to alerting. I looked through the software and haven't found a option for "short decode". Does anyone know if this is or will be a feature of the 5000 series?

It isn’t a setting. It just does it. Kenwood changed the methodology years ago. Kenwood actually did custom firmware for the older models.

So are you saying it has been fixed permanently and the 5000's should alert immediately?

Can't answer that myself. Don't use that in my area.

But are you saying Kenwood changed it years ago so that all radios will now alert immediately? Or Kenwood changed it years ago to where all radios will have the delay?

Can't answer that myself. Don't use that in my area.

I've searched and searched and am frustrated to wits end. Can someone please paste a link or make a video (I know that one doesn't exist) on how to program DMR repeaters with talkgroup ID's into the KPG-D1? I can't figure out where my ID or my state's talkgroup should be put in so I can move forward with programming the rest of the repeaters here.

Thanks.

Under DMR talkgroup list, the id numbers go there. In the channels go to channel edit, scroll down to bottom on ptt select the number corresponding to the TG and that will be that ptt tx TG.

Still not following.

I'll just go ahead and apologize up front. I know nothing about programming talkgroups or timeslots. I've always programmed conventional systems. I'm programming by personalities due to the number of radio types I'm putting in and to have the ability to use multi-zone scan. I have a multideck setup - VHF deck w/ P25 & NXDN and a UHF deck w/ P25 & DMR.

In the DMR tab I have:
- DMR Information
- Individual ID List > (is this where my personal DMR ID goes?)
- Group ID List > (is this where the talkgroup goes, ie. statewide talkgroup 3121 and/or tactical talkgroup 310?)
- Status List

Then in the Personal tab I have:
- System Information (using MDC-1200 as default)
- Personal Features (no idea what to do with Data System-Personality)

Then finally I have my Personalities tab which is where I'm getting confused the most:
- Color Code (makes sense)
- Slot Selection (makes sense, only two options)
- SelCall on PTT (no idea... Use Off, Group Call, or Individual Call?)

Finally, say I want to switch between talkgroups such as statewide and tactical or maybe eavesdrop on a different state's talkgroup; do I have to program a separate personality so that I can use both talkgroups?

Again, sorry for such a long post and complete lack of understanding on DMR programming. This is my first DMR radio and I am finished researching for the day. I just need a video on Youtube or a walkthrough to show me how to program DMR. AHHHH! I'm gonna go chop wood or something to get some frustration out!

Thanks!

Personality is where your ID goes.

Selcall on PTT, what TX group you want TX on, for that channel.

Switching groups on the fly, menu, call, group, scroll to id and key up.

As for listening, just check gid scan and it will scan.

Can you email me at kd4efm1 at gmail, i will send you the program guide in a bit, busy cooking and smoking dinner.

Hello All:

I have a couple of questions to start with. First off, I have just received my new NX-5700/NX-5800. I am using the KCH-20R Enhanced Control Head. I am semi-new to Kenwood. I have worked with Kenwood in the past but it has been a while. I have been a Motorola guy for years. When Kenwood came out with the ability to do P25 and DMR in one radio, I made the jump. Motorola doesn't get it that interoperability means to be able to everything in one radio. I have a specific need for this, that is why I purchased it. Here are my questions/issues:

1. - I have about 40 or channels programmed into the VHF deck, which is Deck 1. I have a scan list set up to scan the channels in the main zone, BY the way, there is only one zone and all the channels are in that zone. I think I have about 20 channels in the scan list. When I put the radio in scan and pick the mic up to talk on Channel 1, it reverts me to channel 2, which is also priority 2 in the scan list. Anyone have an idea as to why?

2. - DOS Hold Off. As I mentioned, I came from Motorola. Motorola had features where you could program DOS Hold Off so that the data burst would not be heard, either at the beginning of the transmission or the end of the transmission that you would be receiving. Does Kenwood offer anything like that?

These are the only 2 I have for now. If anyone needs to see the files on these two decks, let me know. I can email them off. Also, if anyone could offer up some pointers on programming, I'm up for any suggestions.

Thank you in advance.

**UPDATE**

I figured out the issue with highlighted in #1. I had the channel acting as a data channel so when I removed that feature everything is working fine now.

Also, can someone put into layman's terms scanning and which is the best option to choose. I have 2 channels that I use as priority. The way my old Motorola's worked is I programmed the channels I wanted into the scan list, set my priority channel(s), sampling time, hang time and so forth and away I went. Kenwood seems to make things a little more difficult than they need to be, or is it just me not being use to Kenwood.

Thanks,
Nick

When I go into the "DMR" tab and look at the "Individual ID List" section. Checking out how many ID's I can enter and it shows the maximum to be 100. Really? only 100 individual id's are allowed? Heck the MD380 allows up to 1,000. Whats up with that Kenwood???!!!!

I thought the same thing, but you can have more than that. I think it is like 1500, if I'm not mistaken, that you share between P25, DMR and NXDN. So, if you want more in DMR, you have to remove some from the other services. I think I ended up with 10 for NXDN, 25 for P25, and the rest for DMR.

???? You can adjust that. I have my ID list blank. I don't need names of people I won't ever talk to in my life time. But that's just me. Click on list portion, adjust to your needs. Max is 1500.

I shouldn't have to steal quota from one digital format to another. I would have thought it would have had a quota of at least 500 each... I can easily fill up 100 individual id contacts...

I will go into the program and see if I can figure out how to remove from the others...

Nxdn has OTAA, no need to fill up a list when I can see it on caller id.
