If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I spoke with Kenwood Tech support yesterday as I was looking for guidance on how to program my NX-5800 for Roaming. The tech support guy put me on hold for a little while so he could fire up the software and look around. Once he came back on the line, he confirmed that it does not appear to be in the software are he also received information that it is being worked. I asked him if this is something I should be expecting soon in a firmware upgrade and he confirmed yes.

So, with that said, I did not ask about anything else. I'm hoping that Kenwood is listening to their end users regarding some of the other issues other individuals are having and they fix a whole bunch of things at once.

So long as you go through the dealer, yes, they are listening. They do not monitor this site or any other sites for the ups and downs.

Is there a way to keep the channel announcement from activating over traffic being received?

Yeah I've went back and forth with it, I like the idea of not having to look at what channel I'm on but I don't like the idea of potentially missing something important.

Not trying to be a wise guy but the answer is to not use it. Kill it in programming.

Yeah, I agree, kill it. I set up one of my radios with it to try. Lasted about 3 days and I removed it. Annoying to have it do that every time I change channels. Got tired of it really quick.

I can see where there's a need for this, but rare cases.

It would be a lot better if Kenwood made it where you can turn on/off voice announcement from the radio.

I did just discover that if you set control tone to selectable via the programming software it will allow you to change the control tone and voice announcement tone volume between off and two other preset amounts via the radio. So I guess in a way this allows you to turn it off via the radio.

You know I thought the same thing, but it turns on for everything except getting a regular voice message. The moto xpr 5550 lights up for just a general voice message. I wish they would add that so it would light up while receiving a normal message...

Maybe someone else on here can put a good word in to Kenwood, doesn't seem like it would be that hard to change

I agree, I hope someone can put a bug in Kenwood's ear about backlighting activation when receiving carrier and/or specific PL or RAN code, that would be an excellent feature to have. I can't tell you how many times my radio has started talking (receiving) and I went to look at the display to see which channel I was receiving the transmission on and couldn't tell because the screen was dark. And its just not very convenient having to press a non programmed or any button to make the screen light up. I used to have a Bendix King EPH portable years ago that had auto backlight activation upon signal receive and absolutely loved it, used it all the time. Would be nice to have this in the Kenwood portables. Having constant back lighting is the one thing I love about using a mobile vs a portable, "always on" backlighting. I like to be able to see the display when a transmission is received...

It does it on receipt of a digital transmission, but not analog. It is supposed to do this, but for some reason there seems to be a bug on the conventional side or for some reason they did not include it in the code.

I doubt it is a bug, its probably how Kenwood felt it should function for one reason or another, like everything else with their radios... We the users just need to try and convince them we see it differently.

P.S. No need to use the quote feature when your replying directly under/after the post you are replying to as it is obvious what you are commenting on, quotes get used way too often on these forums. The authors of VBulletin should have made the quote button/feature harder to find...

I just noticed that Kenwood has the "Maintenance" feature completely removed from the selection list when "Multi Deck Operation" is enabled. Not sure why they would do that but that sucks as it was a useful feature to have. I wish they would have kept that function, Argh!

DMR & GPS

Will nx-5000 respond to gps queries and report on dmr conventional repeater? I know some gps functions are part of dmr standard and that Motorola has some proprietary tweaks which I believe can be deselected. I've mostly played with the Australian terminal software on Motorola radios. Does nx play gps on p25?

Reading this thread reminds me of another company in the JVC Kenwood Group, and how they act like everything is a feature instead of a bug, that can be fixed with software updates. They also have issues with listening to customers as well. That company is Zetron, that used to make some really nice radio and telephone interface gear. The new Max series though has a lot of problems. Stay away if you are smart, there is a reason the price gets lower as you complain.

For those with Kenwood 5000 series radios, are you at least getting a decent price from the re-sellers if you have problems with "features" that may not work as described before the sale?

I recall going through a Zetron brochure and finding many errors from what was actually sold. Then found out that much of it was features that they never could get to work properly, but did not want to spend money on new brochures. Kenwood may be doing that as well.

You're totally right, dude. Here is a thread dedicated to problems and JVCKenwood's approach: https://forums.radioreference.com/k...-problems-lacks-suggestions-improvements.html

Brilliant! Now if I could get radio check to work (I may be under false impression that K uses term like M in that it pings the other radio just to let you know it's there). I can't even get menu option to begin to work. Not major priority for me as I can private call (I've got respond selected for private call)

What program are you using? Or you using the radio to do radio check?

Using radio. I go to radio check in the menu and when I press radio check it bonks so I can go no further to select ID etc.
indiv+SDM doesn't work either--it brings up list but only option is "CALL" and nowhere to enter text. Nx will receive text from Motorola radio.
Nx responds to page from Motorola but Motorola doesn't respond to page from nx (call).

You enter the ID then you use the d pad I think to enter txt mode, then send. I don't use only did it for a demo once and it worked. Toggle on the d pad. I just confirmed it so hit right key, and enter text
