LONG ISLAND, NY — Suffolk's first responders are expected to conduct large-scale urban search and rescue drills this weekend, near Fire Island National Seashore, in preparation for summer, according to a media advisory. The county's Urban Search and Rescue Team will host the training exercise to practice a deployment to the Fire Island communities in anticipation of high tourism numbers, potentially severe weather, and natural disasters, officials say.
It will coordinate exercises and operations to simulate evacuations, rope and collapse rescues, and wide-area searches, as well as damage evaluations and hazardous materials response, according to officials. In addition to the county's Urban Search and Rescue team, participating agencies will include the Federal Emergency Management Agency's New York Urban Search and Rescue Team, the state's Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services and park police, as well as Fire Island National Seashore representatives. The training exercise will also include the county's Suffolk police's Marine Bureau, the West Islip Fire Department, and the Town of Islip Harbormaster.

What would happen if a Category 4 hurricane slammed into Fire Island? That’s the scenario New York Task Force One trained for this week during a major emergency response drill. Made up of elite members from the FDNY and NYPD, the team practiced rescues involving building collapses, hazardous chemical spills, and missing persons—complete with actors and canine units. The multi-day training is designed to keep Long Island prepared in case disaster strikes. FOX 5’s Jodi Goldberg has the story from Suffolk County.

Knowing Long Island well, that sounds very cool on the South Shore. Are you going to monitor all the different agencies.. will they have one net for all operations?

I guess you will listen to SCPD on the old system. Sounds like some good monitoring.

Let's keep an eye on the conditions, I might be able to get something. Propagation charts have not been treating me well. I think you've been doing a lot better in your location.

I was always amazed by the fire vehicles and police vehicles that were golf carts and they have come a long way. Looks like they're a lot more advanced now.

I remember the cat 4 that hit Long Island in 1976 and they survived in special bunkers on Fire Island but of course it was evacuated. Ground Zero on the main island, Babylonp, West Islip, Bayshore, Central Islip, Islip Terrace, it was a bad one. I was living in West Islip then, on the water at the base of the Robert Moses Bridge.

I'll check out the news media up there on the weekend.
