Yesterday there was a major fire event in town about 1/2 mile from me. I was listening to the Old Bridge NJ trunked system on BOTH my BCD996P2 and also with SDRTrunk ( using the official RTL-SDR.com dongle ) on a PC. There was a LOT of fire department communication ( most of the time there is very little ). I noticed the BCD996P2 was hearing more traffic than the SDRTrunk? I paid close attention, and found the problem was the ' Fire General ' talkgroup, 727, which had lots of traffic on it. For some reason SDRTrunk was ignoring that group completely ( and YES in the Alias group it IS programmed to listen ). Why would SDRTrunk ignore this talkgroup? The BCD996P2 is having lots of simulcast problems, so I am relying on SDRTrunk.

I found the answer! I did not have one of the Alternate Control Channels programmed correctly. SDRTrunk now also hears Fire Gen just fine. Apparently, some talk groups use the alternate control channels. Learn something new every day!
