Has the technology changed so much that this will be a waste of time and just flat out needs to be replaced? Is it capable of receiving 800mhz+ at all?

Like others have said, it could work just fine. I don't know if this is considered a discone or not but I have this on my garage that I bought back in the early 70s for my Bearcat III with equally old RG 58/U.

The only BNC compression fittings I have are for RG/6 (too big) so I stripped back the insulation, pushed it in the fitting and taped it so it wouldn't fall out. Seems to work pretty well on both analog and digital with my 996XT.

I followed the suggestion and contacted the local HAM club that my mother used to belong to and they are going to help me out and re-coax the discone. Won't happen for a few weeks so I bought a temporary from scannerworld http://www.scannerworld.com/ant135bnc

It didn't have great reception in the house so I slapped it on the side of the greatroof. Thank goodness it has a strong magnet! Even though it is pointing the wrong direction it is getting GREAT reception! I am hearing all 5 counties around!

Has anyone tried a fence as a longwire? I have 20 acres fully fenced...?

"RG-58 will have a stranded center conductor."

Not totally correct. RG-58 can have a solid conductor, Depends on "/" designation. Alot of premade mobile mount stuff is solid conductor

Comparing RP58 and RG59:

RG58 will be slightly smaller OD (just over 1/4 in), but with a larger diameter center conductor compared to RG59.

Using a BNC as a guide, RG58 will go loosly into a 75 ohm BNC, but RG 59 will not go into a 50 ohm BNC "backshell"
