Will be moving to Orillia in the next few months and am wondering what's available to listen to up there.

I have a BC895XLT, would I have to/want to upgrade to a digital scanner?

I have used a discone antenna in this area before and had some success pulling in Peel Region Trunked system.

Any and all suggestions are welcome, as well as personal experiences in this area and yes I checked the database. :)

I thank you for pointing out the obvious MilBil, I did mention I had checked the database.

What I am looking for is some advice on what's actually happening in the area not what frequencies are listed for the area - will a discone cut it or should I look at a more efficient setup - is the Peel Region trunk system a gimme or was I just lucky.

It's a while since I monitored up there but I used to be able to pick up the York Regional Police at least on the more eastern boundries.

Otherwise there's Georgian ambulance on the fleetnet system in analog. OPP is digital and they do the policing for Orillia now I believe.

Local fire departments should all be ok in analog.

Proincial park in the area will be on MNR channels.

Perhaps some entertaining listening from Barrie as well. Barrie PD and FD are digital.

I've never tried but you might also be able to get some of the base borden comms too.

As you can see, a digital would be beneficial depending on where your interests lie.
Hope this helps a bit for some pre-planning.

No need for a digital scanner in Orillia as they have a nice strong Urban Repeater on 410.4125mhz if I remember correctly, it has a very distinct courtesy tone which I have yet to hear on any other Beat Repeater.

Nah, not modat. I suspect some sort of Tait proprietary signalling format.

Don't forget you have a really big casino to tune into... :) fun!

Last time I was in the Orillia area (mind numbing conference at some whacked "resort" called The Fern Resort or something)... we got shipped off to that big casino for a "fun day". Oh my... never seen so many grey hairs with eyes the size of saucers focussed at 100m in one place in all my life.

We bailed pretty quick, and I retired with my scanner to listen to a whole lot of nothing for a bit...
