Slightly off topic, but it looks like Cabarrus/Concord also has talkgroups on VIPER. Anyone know how frequently or infrequently these are used? I don't see multiple dispatch or conference like channels, so I'm assuming these talkgroups look mostly like placeholders than anything else.

All counties have VIPER talkgroups for interoperability. Not all of them use them regularly. I know some Concord PD radios have VIPER programmed into them but that's about it.

Yep. Like Trumpetman says: all counties are issued a "default" template of
TGs (SO, FD, EMS, EM, TAC, MAID) and any other talkgroups above the default listing have to be coordinated through the VIPER folks at the NCSHP.
Just because a county has the VIPER default template talkgroups does not mean they use them. Durham has the default template talkgroups but the
only time I have ever heard anyone on them is when I key up on my city issued radio :D.

I have heard the sheriffs and Concord PD use the viper radios but they are normally only used in drug surveillance type of situations. I haven't heard them on Viper since the new P25 system came online 2 weeks ago....

I'm guessing you're guess is more than likely correct.

VIPER doesn't have the radio IDs available to outfit Cabarrus right now. Also, with only 1 VIPER tower in the county, in-building coverage is absolutely impossible in a large majority of the county.

I don't see why you're implying the new P25 system doesn't work. Professional public safety radios are designed to handle the digital simulcast issues much better than scanners, so just because the system doesn't decode well on your scanner doesn't mean that the rest of the legitimate system users are having the same issues.
