Private ID's would also be radios ID's mainly used for private calls so the whole group doesn't hear the convo

If the system is set up for it, one user can basically "direct dial" another user, and have a private conversation with that user instead of it going out over a car-to-car channel that any other user can listen to.

So is it a separate talkgroup or is it something the caller does to his radio to selectively talk to just one radio? How does it change your scanner that you would only hear it and not group broadcasts?

By programming in the RID into the scanner. I do that with one system I monitor. I keeps track of the number of hits on those ID's.

With my PSR-500 (and I assume the RS clones) you can program in a Private Call Wildcard to pick these up. I've only heard private calls on a local utility company's trunked system, however. I've never caught one on any of the public safety systems.

You would set a Wildcard ID (the default when you first set up a trunked system) then scroll down one step to "Type:" and use the right or left arrow to select "Private" instead of "Group". Under "Tag:" I have "Private Call". Then save.

I have an EDACS utility system that uses Private calls for data between multi-sites. It's a great feature to have on a trunking radio, just to see what else is happening behind the scenes.

I used to see a lot of telephone interconnects (many moons ago) on analog Mototrola trunked systems. Now, about all I see are unit to unit calls once and while with occasional private calls to dispatchers. Sometimes in the clear, and sometimes just encrypted noise.
