I thought it would be nice to have a dedicated "Keypad Tricks" post for the PRO-106. The only ones that i see floating around so far are from within the owner's manual. As more are discovered, please consider posting them here. Thank you. :)

CPU "uP App1 Ver F1.6" (F= Factoy; U=Upgrade)
DSP "DSP App Ver F1.3"
"DSP Voc Ver F1.0"

Yes, this is the exact firmware that came with my "08A08" PRO-106.

*The "08A08" (August 2008) build date can be found on the side of the box just above the upc bar code.

Same here, Same code above upc too, I guess August was a "good month" for the 106 hu?

I wonder if 08A08 is the first batch of pro-106's to hit RS, as my serial number is just a little over #1,000.

Ditto, and I have Serial #1020. Also the firmware in these models shows 'RF' (and I suppose 'RU' eventually). I can only assume the R is to signify Radio Shack firmware vs PSR firmware.

Sounds like a bad flash. Perhaps from useing the wrong cable, or by useing the small 3" adapter that comes with the cable.. Was it a display model??

It isn't really a "trick". But this is for those who monitor a lot of aircraft and always complain that the new scanners are too hard to use when you want to switch to a certain frequency quickly. While not quite as quick as a direct channel entry (like older scanners), you can for example hit, tune, 123.5, ent, and you are there in about two seconds, or less if you are quick. I use my PSRs and RS clones for a good deal of aircraft monitoring and have no problems with them.

Here's a neat trick you can try with the PRO-106 which the BCD396T can't do:

Turn the power on, and listen to P25 transmissions without hearing machine-gunning noises every 5 seconds!

Pretty cool option. I found it after powering on the PRO-106 for the very first time. Must be a pretty secret trick, as Uniden hasn't figured out how to do it yet, and they've had four years!

I have a Pro106, 396, and 996. With the Uniden 3.01 firmware I do not get any motorboating on two SZ 4.1 mixed mode systems. I've compared the 106 and 396 side by side (in area with excellent signal) and both decoded digital transmissions fine.

One thing I did notice. On the Uniden I enabled AGC. On the 106 I had to disable it. Listening on the 106 to a local digital PD (conventional) you could hear the background audio ramp up when the dispatcher was not speaking when AGC enabled. Disabling digital AGC on the 106 is much preferred for my ears.

I do like the ability of the 106 to show ind IDs during calls as well as using the programming cable as a discriminator tap/slicer for programs like UniTrunker.

not a big deal but just noticed this code is on the radio as well, under the battery holder on a sticker "look up inside compartment".

Since this post is linked in the wiki and I can't seem to find mention of it anywhere else it's also worth noting that pressing SCAN MAN 36678277 will make it play the Star Wars Imperial song. Works on Pro-106 Pro-651 and Whistler WS1040 as well as the associated base/mobile versions of these radios. Please pass it around :3

Don Starr, the developer of the firmware for those scanners, put that in.

36678277 = donstarr
