I have decide to enter text tags on my digital. What is the best way to enter them? I prefer to enter it by hand. That I don't have the money to get the software at the moment or even the cable.

Tedious. That's the way to enter it by hand. MHO.

Otherwise, just follow the instructions in the manual. Not sure what question you're really trying to ask.

Considering you have 2 -96 based, and 3 -97 based radios, software would be a great investment.

Actually not that hard to do. I don't use software to program mine, and as was already said, if you follow the manual, you'll be ok.

From the programming shortcut in RR Wiki

Storing known Text Tags
1. Press MANual, Press three digits to get the bank and channel number desired then Press
MANual again. (upper left should read Mxxx for your bank and channel number)
2. Press PGM, (upper left should change from M to P)
3. Press Text, the cursor appears on line 3.
4. Using the numbered keys text in the line up to 12 characters. The letters above each number
will help in the selection. Example, POLICE DISP (11 characters counting the space)
The first letter is P, Press the number 7 then the number 1 for P. (7 will open the four
numbers PQRS and by selecting 1 is for the first of these four. A 7 then 2 would get the
letter Q. Pressing up or down to move the courser back and fourth or to correct a mistake.
5. Press ENTer
Note: Chart on page 69 for other text options.

What is it that you are trying to program? Is it a trunking system or conventional? The steps I presented above will place a tag on a frequency, and if it is conventional, it will be displayed on line 4 when active.

If, however, you want to tag a Talkgroup (DEC) in a trunking system, then line 2 in my above list should be modified as follows.

2. Press PGM then TRUNK then use the up/down button to navigate to your ID. This will place the tag on line 4 when active.

Then do step 3 through 5..

Your problem is why most of us prefer to use software. My two previous instructions are a modified shortcut for entering tags. Or follow the steps outlined in the manual on page 68.

Just a question about the pro 2096, instead of trying to find the right text tag for each freq. Could I just put the tags in an empyt channel?

You do understand that the Text Tag means nothing whatsoever to the radio, don't you? The radio only cares about frequencies and TG #'s, the text tags are so you can read it, not the radio.

Adding to comments by Bill and Lou, empty channels are treated as locked out by the scanner, so the scanner does not scan them.

Have yet to get meaningful alpha tags for APCO-25 here in Austin with Win96 and RR Member status. Just get "site 101,102,103, etc here in Austin TX.

Conventional freqs are very good for alpha tags however.

I suspect this is due to the freqs programed are actually Control Channels and not discrete users... (If correct then I say Ahso Deska!)

73's,
Jon

Check the custom bullet and type in the tag. See the example in the p96 zip file.
