Does anyone know the FCC ID numbers of these radios? Would be interesting to see if their is an owners manual available. I want to see all of the features and it is very confussing grasping all the detals thru this fourm.

Rumor has it that they will be TA this month. If it does, you see something here as soon as it's available on the FCC site.

so i vote less keys for smaller size on the handheld.... debate?

Icom got it right with their IC-R2 and R5, yet they are many times smaller than anything GRE or Uniden offers.

dont forget they dont have a full keypad (only a couple) so they can afford to be smaller then GRE or Uniden.

My vote though would be smaller form size with no full keypad (like the R-5 for the handheld PSR-500 at least probably wouldnt fly on the 600).

I say this as once fully programmed via computer my 96 I only really use

vol/sq
up and down
MAN or Scan
lockout
light

yet I have 26 keys + directional arrow (and a brick sized radio),
the PSR-500 looks to have 29 keys + the directional arrow!!

one major disadvantage though is it means it would be hard to turn a bunch of banks on/off. Which I dont normally do but other users might. Plus non computer programming would be a massive pain.

so i vote less keys for smaller size on the handheld.... debate?

If the rumor mentioned by DaveIN above is correct ("Rumor has it that they will be TA this month"), then I think it's highly unlikely that any substantial changes to the chassis are possible. I would've expected GRE to show their latest/greatest at Dayton, and would kind of doubt that they'd be creating new hardware the month before an FCC submission.

I am excited to see these scanners coming. The PSR-500 is much needed here in Arkansas with the statewide system. The memory management on a handheld is just what the doctor ordered for me.

As Mike has mentioned, look for The Popular Communications Aug. Edition, It will be out mid July. I hope if you can, purchase this issue.

Well personally I like it bigger. I don't have kids size hands so I don't need a kid sized radio.

Besides having big hands, I noticed a couple months ago that I am starting to see the first signs of developing farsightedness.

So a small scanner, with a small keyboard, and small lettering won't be a plus for me :)

Not to mention, I don't like the small speakers and low audio output. The PRO-83 that I have is almost useless in a car....

A couple of questions that I have:

Does the NAC/PL/DPL decoding function like the PRO-96, where you have to specify PL or DPL mode, or does it have an automatic decode where it will pick up and display whatever is used?

Also, does the "close call" (I can't remember what GRE is calling it) feature an autostore mode? My PRO-83 drives me nuts since it does't have the auto store type feature that my Opto Scout has.

Thanks,

Warren

He,he...my arms started getting too short 30 years ago Warren, ya must be getting around 40.:p Hair should start graying shortly.

I too prefer the Pro-96 size.

Another major DISADVANTAGE would be to carry a lap top in ADDITION TO YOUR RADIO SCANNER. Some people feel fine using the key pad. NOT everybody has a COMPUTER.

Object oriented scanning - going to be different that the dynamic memory hierarchy of Uniden. Objects are either trunked talkgroups or conventional frequencies - then you build whatever systems from their.

Can someone explain this to a uniden junkie?

how can you explain O-O-S to a lay-scanner-person?

Is this correct?

928.00125-939.9875 12.5 kHz?
Why would the first number have 5 places AFTER the decimal
and then the second number have 4 places AFTER the decimal?

939.98750 is the same as 939.9875

Did you check the Wiki? It's got a description - why not read through then ask a specific question?

Frankly, I've tried to understand OOS from the wiki, and I think I'll need to wait for the O/M (and maybe a unit). A flowchart or data map might help.

We need a good GOOSE (GRE Object-Oriented Scanning Explanation). ;)

uniden's dynamic memory is the best thing to happen to scanners since radioreference.com ... i guess gre's oos is gonna be the same thing, except confusing ...

What exactly is so confusing about it? Are you speaking from experience playing with the scanner at Dayton (or somewhere else)?
