Provided you can remember all the stupid FCN + whatever commands, then yes it's easy. There is no way a person could begin to know what they all are without reading the manual first. At least with a menu it's somewhat intuitive.

Erm, on GRE kit you don't have to hit FCN commands to save a CTCSS/DCS code either--all you have to do is hit "enter" and it saves it. The PSR-500 is likely also going to have one-button save of this info, too.

And in regard to whether it will autofind and save NAC codes--the answer is "yes", just as it does with CTCSS and DCS codes. (Seeing as most places don't publish NAC codes, the function would be kind of useless without having an NAC autodetect! :D)

Is this the 'programming issues with Pro96' thread?

*LOL* Wondering that myself, to be honest :3 (Of note to people who despise the manner of programming used with the Pro-96: the PSR-500 should be much less painful, if commentary from GRE is to be believed. In part, that's why they're going to menus for things :3)

People who despise the programming of the PRO-96 are people who despise reading. To wit, "There is no way a person could begin to know what they all are without reading the manual first."

Well, that's what the manual is for. I have no sympathy for people who complain about how difficult the radio is to use while refusing to RTFM.

Anyone besides myself remember getting their 396's and not having software released yet?
Hopefully Don Starr gets an early start on software.

Any word on whether the 500 will ship with an interface cable and AC adaptor included in the price or will it go the RS route and charge extra for every accessory?

Also, will this baby be PC controllable?

I remember not having the software out for the 396 when it first came out - made programming larger systems take a pretty long time - but it could be done.

The 500, according to the Wiki, will be computer controllable through the PC/IF port.

I remember just using the software that came with my 396. I still use it this day.

The Pro-96 on the other hand didn't come with software, so I bought it from Don. Wise choice too. Hopefully, GRE will provide software with the new scanners.

Yea I remember when the 396ts first came out. No software, the infamous silk-screen issue and the firmware which was 2-3 versions out of date to make certain scanner functions to work properly.

Had all 3 issues...2 years later, still love it.
Dynamic memory and Close Call made up for alot of mistakes!

It's called a GUI (Graphical User Interface).

That way I don't HAVE to remember it. Anyway... it doesn't matter we all have our preferences. I'm just glad they decided to use a menu system. It's probably the only real way to manage a dynamic memory system anyway.

I just want them to release the thing. I can't wait to get one. I hope the receiver is as good as the 96 series.

I have 2 of them, both bought pre-order and had all 3 problems also. I like mine too. Just had to bear with Uniden a little bit. The Pro-96 as far as it's memory management is concerned is one of a kind and that is what promted Uniden to come up with dynamic memory and now GRE answers back with their own version of dynamic memory. Chances are we won't see memory management like the Pro-96 and the Pro-2096 again.

Actually the Wiki says it will have 21 V-Scanners. Sounds like the PRO-96, but better.

V-Scanners using dynamic memory not V-Scanners using banks like the Pro-96 and Pro-2096.

So your saying you like the limitation of fixed banks and channels?

OK, I see there is a wee bit of confusion going on with this :3

Anyways--PSR-500 will have unlimited sizes of banks, there will be a limit based only on scanner memory as to how many channels you can have.

Each particular config can be stored in a V-Scanner.

If anything, it is probably taking the best of both worlds--the dynamic-memory of the Uniden kit (with unlimited sizes of banks thus making the bank concept more of a "folder" concept) and V-Scanners (which basically save a backup of a particular config so you can load it and go).

Hello,

I attended a meeting today with Mr. Yokoyama, Mr. Taniguchi, and Mr. Wilson from GRE at R&R Communications. While I cannot disclose what was discussed, I did see and play with the PCR500. All I can say is WOW! Nice handheld. Good audio and Spectrum Sweeper works as advertised.

Here are some highlights:

* Face Plate will be Black.
* Dust Cover for Headphone Jack.
* Accessories: The unit will be supplied with AC Adapter and GRE USB Programming Cable.
* The battery charging circuit is voltage based, not timer. You can select what type of battery is used.
* Note: If these items have been announced, my apologies.

There are other things that will be announced as the scanner is close to being released, including software. I had a good time with GRE and hopefully we will meet again.

So it's more like the one on the drawings?

Very Close. I saw a preproduction model, which had a silver faceplate. GRE had pictures of the production models. The GRECOM silk screen logo was a different color due to the black faceplate.
