Yes

The more I read about this thing, the more I'm on the fence if I want one or not??
I'm not liking the limitations.
CAN it be programmed without software, on the fly?

The scanner comes with an older version of Radio Reference.com's data base. You can use that to import systems and frequencies and be up and running in about 5 minutes. You will need the computer program EZScan to update the library data base to the current one.

Version 1.05 is the EZSCAN software versions and 1.6 is the cpu version after updating both.

I upgraded both software and CPU firmware.

Suppose to be a pop-up menu to set default battery meter values on the voltage set list. Not finding this.

Software, help file was no help as it appears to be for a previous version.

In the program move your mouse over the battery setting and right mouse click. It will say "set default values" there.

X2-tdma

Does anyone else listen to X2-TDMA systems?

It could be just a coincidence but I just updated my PSR800 to the latest firmware and X2-TDMA audio decode sounds terrible.

It usually was rather hard to hear but it sounds worse after the upgrade.

It used to be that I would get 7/10 conversations would sound good. Now it's more like 2/10.

Can anyone else confirm?

So this means systems and tg's or conventional can NOT be programmed in with a pc handy?

Assuming you meant "without" you are wrong. Everything that can be done with a PC can be done from the scanner, admittedly not always as easily, but it can still be done without a computer. Except, of course, downloading the database updates.

That IS what I meant, Thanks for the info. I'm glad it can be programmed WITHOUT a pc. :)

Could you detail how you are programming your 800 without a PC? I have never found that feature.

Read the manual. It has all you need to know. The only tricky bit is how to enter numbers without a keypad.

It is certainly easier to program from the computer and that's what I generally do and recommend you do. But the fact remains that you can program the thing without one. If you ever really need to and have the manual with you you'll learn.

No, you can't.

You can program conventional and that's it. If you are saying that trunking objects/systems can be edited I would like to know how because there is no option for it in any menu and no mention of it in the manual.

Just for a fair warning, I own a PSR-800, and you cannot input a new frequency into the scanner by hand. You can copy things from the onboard copy of the RadioReference database into the working memory of the scanner, but you can't create a new system, add talkgroups, etc., without a computer.

You can use a workaround to monitor a single frequency, by setting a search range that only contains that one frequency. You can also save said frequency into your working memory, from the search screen. But if you are looking for a scanner which you can add frequencies, talkgroups, etc., to by hand, without a connection to a PC, this is not your scanner.

You can input a new conventional via the search > Menu > Store Channel

You can't input or edit trunking parameters other than alpha tags, recording and lighting options etc...
