First of all let me just say that I have done an FCC license search on Publix and have come up with numerous frequencies with no locations actually given. And every Publix I have been into in the Tampa area I see a security guard with a two-way radio and an earpiece, and I am wondering who they could be talking to and what frequencies they might be using? I also looked and did a search on the Forum is here and pretty much came up with the same list of frequencies. Just wondering what the deal is, T. I. A. T. T.

Are they a Publix employee or a contracted Guard.
Could be they are on the Company channel not Publix....?

What licenses did you find, could be a nationwide/wide area and will never have any fixed location info...

I suspect it's contract security. My info is some years out of date but at one time very few of these big chain stores operated their own security services, they hired folks whose job was security. If you can get close enough to see a company name on a badge or shoulder patch it might be helpful in finding license info. Or not, as they might be renting space on a local commercial system. As stated above, Close Call and its equivalents are your friend here.

Publix in the Jacksonville area does not use sercurity officers . They used to hire the Jacksonville Sheriff"s Officers in stores. Now they have no security or off duty police unless it is a really bad area.

FWIW, none of the Publix stores in Columbus, GA (5) use any security.

Based on their infrequent use of security guards, I suspect Publix would contract it out on an individual store or city basis.

Yes they are all pretty much Hired Hands from various local security companies. The gentleman I spoke to said a lot of his counterparts listen to scanners while they're on duty. So there is no Publix Security Comms Network after all even though in the beginning it sounded kind of cool.

Well I know for a fact that some of the stores have Tampa Police Department officers in there in plain clothes wandering around because I saw one apprehend a shoplifter and do the actual arrest right then and there in the store, and I'm pretty sure he had his off-duty portable unit with him as well. I imagine they get a bit of shoplifting business in there things like steaks,
higher-end items, ect.

That's a sign they mean business. So many places refuse to prosecute and simply bar the bad guys. If you have cops there, you're making a statement. They cost a lot more than Rent-A-Cops so the stores may consider it an investment.

Having a true law enforcement officer there is truly a good idea. They have the training and experience and, as noted, they can do the actual arrest right in the store. Via radio, they can also quickly do a background check on those they come into contact with.

Pursuant to Sec. 812.015(3)(a), Fla. Stat., a merchant or an employee of a merchant may take a person into custody for retail theft, given they have probable cause to believe such has occurred and that taking the person into custody will result in recovering the stolen property.

Almost every state has a "citizen's arrest" provision of one sort or another. They still have to turn them over to law enforcement authorities. It ultimately involves paperwork and other procedures that only law enforcement can do. The citizen involvement can be beneficial, though.

Publix Security

Tampa Tracker, that was me who you inquired with, and I pulled out my 436 (Gandy).
Some stores have their own FRS radios that talk to each other with. The other times The mgrs. have a FRS radio they keep in contact with the LP guys who furnish their own radios for the mgrs to carry.
Other than that, Publix doesn’t have a system wide communications system like Wal Mart or Target

I realize that. I was pointing out the specificity of Florida's law in relation to retail theft.
