Hello everyone,

I hope the new year has started well for you all. I am in the Rowan and Cabarrus county area and have a question. I am basically a newbie although I have loved scanning and have had some scanners through the years. I want to get a scanner to listen to all of the local Police, Fire and Rescue mostly, as well as state HP. I do have an old Radio Shack Pro-95 I use for marine and air traffic but nothing else. I am still trying to learn A LOT, but am I correct in that this area uses simulcast and would a SMS100 work well in this area? Thank you for any information you can give me.

Since everything in our area is utilizing a digital trunked system, you would want to consider purchasing either a BCD436HP or an SDS100.

There are three systems you'd likely want to monitor: Rowan-Salisbury TRS, UASI, and VIPER.

I'm in the southern area of Rowan County. Feel free to shoot me a direct message.

Thank you for the response! I live in China Grove, so we aren't too far apart then. I will definitely shoot you a pm when I get my scanner in the coming weeks! Thank you for offering!

I would try and stick with the SDS series scanners as those are capable of simulcast systems. Rowan and Cabarrus and simulcast systems and that scanner will best handle that. VIPER in Rowan County is not a simulcast but if you decide to travel, Iredell County, Mecklenburg County, Davidson County, and others in the area operate off a simulcast site or system

...VIPER in Rowan County is not a simulcast...
VIPER in Rowan County is simulcast as there are three tower sites, two in Salisbury and one on High Rock Mountain.

In addition, we have a stand-alone public safety TRS that is simulcast from five different towers around the county.

VIPER in Rowan County is not a simulcast. There are three separate sites. If they were a simulcast, they would be like the Rowan TRS with all sites having the same control channel and carrying the same traffic

I am seriously leaning toward the SDS100, I want to be able to take it with me where I go, and I do go to all of those counties. Thank you for the response.

State HP is on VIPER or am I mistaken?

All state agencies are on Viper.

That includes the Highway Patrol and Incident Management Assistant Patrol (IMAP) units.

They used to crosspatch Highway Patrol on both the Rowan and UASI systems. But that is a thing of the past.

It's obvious you don't know what simulcast is if you think Viper in Rowan County is a simulcast.
