Stimuli I agree totally with what you say. If you know YOUR area you have a lot better chance. There are a lot of techiniques for staying out of trouble. When I was a lot younger we use to race from here to the next town across the turnpike.. kind of like a mini cannonball. 92 miles. I was lucky I had a family member who told me all about radar. So I learned about its quirks and used it many times to get out of trouble. Back then the state troopers only ran mobile radar no stationary as they do today. That is why I recommended learning about radar operation. Of course in my state radar is moot point. If an officer wants to he can write you a ticket based only on visual observation.....I know I got one when I was young. One of only too I have ever gotten. As a cop I have NEVER written one just on observation.

In my opinion the people that have scanners/detectors/cbs are usually not there problem. People who are driving stupid ie faster than their vehicle is capable, people driving in the left hand passing lane when not passing and people driving with their heads up their ass including cell phone users are a LOT bigger problem.

Downloadable software for Arizona DPS?

I just purchased the BC246T and I would like to know if there is a software program with frequencies that I can download via the programmable cable?

Thats a good idea for a product.. How about a radar detector with maybe a 20 channel programmable scanner integrated into it..

You all heard it here first.. Next year when uniden steals my idea, I'll need you all to back me up in court for my lawsuit..

I have both! They are a great combination. Not all law enforcement officers carry radar guns, and officers are not always transmitting.

You may pick up signals on one or the other or both at the same time.

IMO, in all reality to all the LEO's out there.....you have got to be kidding me...you dont really estimate the speed before you turn the radar on. maybe "I estimate s/he is going above the speed limit" and then use that to justify estimating the speed. but there are so many factors like being on a small road, being on a 6 lane divided road, being on a highway with 20 yards of median between you and the opposite direction, and the fact that there are so many factors makes it hard for me to believe that even 25% of tickets that are written are actually an estimated speed confirmed by radar. and id rather take my chances with a radar detector than take my chances of recieving a warning, espicially from small towns on interstates that make a boat load of money on tickets or a state trooper. the best shot I have of getting out of a ticket is going to court and hoping and praying the officer does not show up, but since they are getting paid, these chances are slim to none.

I know LEOs that do just that... Visually look for speeders and only turn the radar on when they visually see someone speeding.. and I am in Virginia where detectors are illegal... So in a state that detectors are legal I can see them doing just that even more so.

I have both, but I don't use my radar detector. I would rather use my scanner. Much more info on it then the radar detector.

The Beltronics STi Driver is the top dog in radar detectors - without a doubt, the very best (until now, see the 9500i below).

The Beltronics PRO RX65 is just as good without some of the advanced features.

As others have written, the Escort Passport 8500 X50 is a top choice as well as the Escort Solo 2 (wireless version of the 8500);

But now there is the potential contender for top dog of 2007, the new Escort Passport 9500i (basically the 8500 with GPS and advanced features - also see this 9500i review, this test, and these videos).

RadarBusters.com is an excellent source for radar detector equipment, testing, and other related products.

To avoid laser detection, the Blinder X-treme will make you virtually invisible to laser guns. See the tests and videos on this laser jammer.

EDIT: PS. My references above are from years of study and use of these products (and having been on the other side of the radar gun, too).

I might be a little late joining the coversation but ithought i'd throw my thoughts out there anyway. I frequently make long trips from the Saint Louis area up to chicago, sometimes to nashville, kansas city, etc I travel atleast 2 times per month and have for the last year. Having been busted for speeding my fair share of times i figured it was time to even the odds.

There is no substitute for a good radar detector. I use a Belpro65 and wouldn't leave home without it. Sure there are instances where the officer may use instant on radar, or even POP(although you can't write a ticket off of POP radar as far as i know) but those instances are going to be few and far between. Someone on the first page of this thread gave some excellent tips on how to drive and i would have to agree with him 100%.

Never speed up hills or around blind corners because those are the prime spots for the officers to sit. And most importantly always keep a "rabbit" or what i call "bear-bait" out in front of you. If you have someone running 85 let him get about 1/4-1/3 mile ahead of you. He will get hit with radar long before you do giving your detector time to go off and you time to slow down.

I also bring along a scanner more for entertainment purposes than for avoiding the police. Generally speaking the only time a scanner is going to help you is if #1 there is a large speedtrap setup and you are constantly hearing other motorists plates run, as the frequency gets clearer you know you are getting closer, or #2 you hear the lone cop of the side of the road who just nailed a speeder and you are lucky enough to hear him call out his current location. It is nice to know in advance where the officer is sitting, allbeit he just pulled over someone else, but he might be done and waiting for the next sucker when you come speeding past.

I run a cb in my truck which is great for avoiding traffic problems but you need a good CB antenna to really make it worth your time. When i use mine it does a good job and does alert me to where the troopers might be hiding, but the cops are on the move all the time, and knowing that there "was" a cop sitting at milepost 250 and i'm at say milepost 200 isn't really that valuable of information.

If you want a nice little unit you all might try the BCT-12 if you can find one on ebay. They are about the same size as a radar detector and alert you with a 0-9signal meter of nearby transmissions from highway patrol. It is a basic unit with 50 state plus canada preprogrammed in it, and there is no way of changing anything in its memory. It also has DOT, news, wx, etc search banks. I don't use mine so much anymore because its hard to say how uptodate the preprogrammed frequencies are. The model came out i believe in the mid 90's and was discontinued sometime ago. It worked decent for me in Missouri, but back in its hayday(prolly 10 years ago) it was considered better than sliced bread:D

Also, one more note about using a scanner for travelling, it is a pain in the a$$ to program a trip from your home town to anywhere, and then once you get back home reprogram your scanner back to the way it was with your local frequencies. With a 246 or similar it wouldn't be so bad because it has a huge memory. However i also have a BCT-8 and 5 banks just isn't enough memory to store your local frequencies plus other states highwaypatrol/sheriff/whatever else you want to listen to.

Hope that helps, radar detector is your best bet if you really need to speed. That and not driving like a moron and paying attention to your surroundings.

I must say Okla-lawman,for a cop your spelling isn't very good.I know it's off topic but don't you have to be able to spell correctly to be a police officer? or doesn't the judge mind police reports that look like a 10 year old wrote them? I dont mean to sound like a pr***.For all I know it's just because you are typing too fast. But it does seem suspicious. What police department did you say you worked for?

I have a scanner vs radar detector question. My current radar detector has died and I'm in the market for a new one. But, perhaps I'd be better served with a hand held scanner like the Icom IC-R5 or Uniden BC246T? Than way I could scan the CB channels plus law enforcement (Highway Patrol/Sheriff/etc) to keep informed of traffic problems and speed traps. What is the range of these receivers? Is my thinking flawed or should I have both a scanner AND a radar detector. I ride a sport bike and don't have a lot of room for accessories.

Scanner VS RADAR detector

Well Escort got my $449.00. I ordered a 9500I to add to my PRO-2067, PRO-96, and my Superstar 120FM W/ Wilson 5000. I feel they all have thier own uses at thier own times. I get responses out of truckers about 90 % of the time and they are sometimes definately the long range warning system for Bears. I just hope the 9500 works as well as all of the critiques of the unit.

I recently drove to California and back from the east coast, with a radar detector (a Valentine) on the entire time. The VAST majority of the officers we passed were emitting constant radar signals, as opposed to the "pulse" you get from turning the radar on and off.

I don't know if it's a widespread policy to turn the detector on only when they see someone going fast, but if it is, they aren't doing it very well.
