Yep, VTS is Vessel Traffic Services. I hear them all the time from my location, 6 miles or so south west of Manhattan.

I just used google and do see a Rescue 21 site there (DF andVHF antennas seen on Google Streetview). Note that that web page says manned which most Resuce 21 sites that I know are not.

Many of the VTS and Rescue 21 sites are shared. Just makes sense from a coverage and economic standpoint.

The rescue 21 sites are pretty easily identifiable since they'll have at least 1 VHF Adcock array for direction finding on the tower.

Yes (I mentioned that in my earlier post), and that one does. I have only seen the DF array atop a tower and thus never more than one on a tower.

Also Sectors can select one site or multiple ones to transmit on at once depending on the situation.

Yes, each Sector can take over if needed for the other, but for RDF (Radio Direction Finding) it is also helpful to have access to the adjacent towers for overlap

Yes, some only just recently (past 2 yrs) began to appear re-named as VTS, each any everyone in my area has been matched to a Rescue 21 site
Even those without heavy traffic, others are just the MMSI

Yes, I seen Rescue 21 operating a my local Sector.

When a radio transmits you see the area in which it is located on the map display. Also see lines of positions coming from site locations displayed on map display
