Me too....But I leave em plugged in for days sometimes. Have been since I owned my first BC-200XLT. My 246 is plugged in now for 3 days. Its cold...... . But I do own a La Crosse BC 700 and it is plenty. After all your just charging batteries.:)

There are several threads on here about people who have charged their batteries in their radios and had the batteries overheat, or explode in the radio, destroying it. An external charger is a lot cheaper to replace than a radio. After all, you're just charging batteries. :)

Yep...and I bet I read every one or two of them. (Been a member for a while). When Upman says don't charge your batteries in your radio I'll take heed. The only reason I bought a charger was so I could charge 1 or 3 at a time. I use to also use the chargers that came with the batteries. Also Taboo...I also never buy insurance for anything I buy...(electronics)....I live on the edge......Go Bucks.....:twisted:

Be interested to know what cycle life you are getting that way?

What kind of batteries are you using and how long to they last per charge, give or take?

Bucko fan here too! Raise that Jolly Roger!!!

I don't use them in order....I have 2 radios I take to work..(246 396xt) 12 hrs. After 8 hrs the batts. die... I reach in a bag and grab some more. I have about 20 spares. I check them every once in while with a meter. Recharge with the LaCrosse and recondition. There's no method to my madness.....(the go Bucks was for the Buckeyes cause the other guy was from Indiana. (They play this week) :lol:. But being in Eastern Ohio, Huge Pirates fan...Go Bucs.... Raise It....)

I was always using the highest Energizers but the last batteries I bought was the Eneloop Pro 2450s. Cost more but when I grab a few I know they keep their charge. I would say they last a little longer.... Average batteries last about 9 hrs give or take an hour. depends on scan and volume and light. 2 batteries in a 246 and 3 in a 396xt is almost the same time

Cool. I plan on going with some Eneloops. I also have a set of 2300 mah Energizers to play with along with the 2300 mah ones that came with the unit. Which should give plenty to cycle through for now.

I stopped buying the 2300mah Energizers, it always seems like once I get into about 9 months or so of use I always get a couple failed ones here and there. I bought a set of white Eneloops at the same time and those are still going strong. I have one last set of the Energizers that do not get used near as much and they seem to be holding up. Energizers just don't seem like they have long term durability of heavy use like the Eneloops.

what is the expense of those eneloops compared to the 2300mah energizers though. if you factor price difference, is it really worth it? how may energizers can u buy for a set of eneloops?

Considering I am using a set of Eneloops a year after the Energizer failed and the Eneloops are still going strong, justifies the cost difference between the 2 brands IMO.

@baayers

When you charge batteries in the 9000 it will charge the batteries up to approximately 90-95% then it will rely on what they call a top off charge which lasts an hour to finish charging the cells. Four example if you set the charger to charge at 1000MaH it will charge to approximately 95% and relies on a 250MaH top off charge to finish the job. Even though the display reads done it may still be in the top off charge mode so you need to allow for extra time.

I have been reading it can be as low as 80% after the display reads done. Subsequently, I have an e-mail pending an answer from a Maha support representative I have corresponded with on other questions. We'll see what he says...

The only thing I have found so far that is even close to a complaint is that when the battery reaches a full charge the display reads full. You have to hit the display button to toggle through the different information and after five seconds the display reverts back to full.

I asked Ambient Weather about this and they denied it.....their/his quoted answer:

"I doubt this. It will stay on the screen you display."

You are not the only one that has made this compliant, a reviewer on Candle Power stated the same exact issue. So I don't understand why they are not acknowledging it....confused on that one.

On a side note have you noticed the LCD screen being unevenly lit? Read that con too at CP and Amazon.

@N5XTC - Finally decided!

Well, I have decided to go with the Maha Powerex Wizard One MH C9000 Battery Charger-Analyzer!

After extensive reading, searching, reading some more and searching some more, I determined the C9000 is what I wanted out of a charger. It may even be more than I need, but at least I'll have the piece of mind, that if I decide I want to go "battery geek" with my batteries, I have the charger to do it with.

Another huge selling point for me was Maha's customer support. Everything I have read points to it as being top-notch. My first hand experience with them also confirmed it as well. Every inquiry I made by email was promptly answered to my satisfaction. Which leads me to believe if I have issues they will be responsive and actually supportive. Every review or comment I read where folks had an issue with their product (which was few and far between), commented they were promptly accommodated either by repair or exchange with no back-log or red tape.

An example being, a couple of posts I read in another forum about an owner who after FIVE years started experiencing display issues with the screen being hard to read, etc.. He was thinking about replacing his Maha with another name brand charger other then Maha and was asking for advice. In a later post he goes on to mention that he ended up contacting Maha support and they offered to give him a new LCD screen display free of charge minus shipping and that he decided he would do that instead. A few posts later he posts that he received a box from Maha and inside was a BRAND NEW charger! Maha, unbeknownst to him decided to just give him a brand new C9000....after 5 years of owning his other one, which by the way was well past the 3 year warranty. All that was not working in his old charger was the LCD screen and Maha just went ahead and gave the guy a whole new charger instead, when all he was expecting was to get his LCD screen replaced......That right there sealed the deal for me! You can't go wrong with support like that.

(If only another company would follow that lead when it comes to their screen/display issues.) ;)

Other less expensive battery chargers with less bells and whistles may work well for many, so the C9000 may not be for everybody, but I am of the opinion this a quality charger that will last me many years and even if not, Maha may very well GIVE me another one to last me some more years if need be.

In sum, given the hundreds of overwhelming positive reviews I read, coupled with all the positive feedback I received here and in other places, I figured at that the end of day (in my opinion) for the price of the investment and quality of the product, there is no better charger out there right now.

Besides if all else fails, I will take comfort in knowing that at least I will have another toy to play with. :D

I am going with Amazon. Specifically the one distributed by Thomas Distributing Battery Supply and Electronics. Read nothing but good things about him and his company review wise. He has a sale going on his site right now for it, but your order has to be $100 or more to get free shipping via his site:

Maha MH-C9000 Advanced Battery Charger

Instead, since I have a wish list I put together in Amazon for some other things I going to purchase at the same time, I am going to get the charger at Amazon, but through him:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00454YCWY?keywords=maha c9000&qid=1444433651&ref_=sr_1_2&sr=8-2

Its only $1.98 difference on Amazon and I am getting free shipping. He also adds a travel bag when you order it through Amazon. Although I have heard the bag is not great. Its a generic brand, not the one specifically made for the C9000. That one was discontinued by Maha awhile ago. However, you can still find it on EBay for $7 bucks if you want an actual Powerex travel case:

Maha Powerex Deluxe Nylon Carrying Travel Case 23x16x5 cm for Battery Charger | eBay

Yeah.....believe me, all this research has made me know more than I ever wanted to know about chargers and batteries.

A guy could make a whole separate hobby out it if he wanted too. :D
