I think it's very intresting compare noise performance between RSP1B and Msi.SDR Panadapter (chinese clone of RSP1a) and RTL 820T2 ic.

Socket B is the old printer style port. It's great if your SDR is meant for the desktop and will never move but it's hardly the best option. While USB-C is all the rage, USB Mini is probably best. USB-Micro works for the Airspy R2 but I'd rather have Mini in that case.

Okay, so the size of the port is the “epic failure”? My RSP2 mostly rests on a desktop, but it does see use in a vehicle while using a tablet as well as when traveling. I never had a problem and it also uses the type B.

Question: Does the type B mount more securely to a board than the mini, micro, or type C?

Really, if there was going to be a change, it should be to USB-C. It's not "all the rage" - it's the connector that's been in common use since 2018 and is here to stay. Mini is terrible due to the lack of the mechanical latch. Micro has nothing over USB-C anymore, it isn't rated for as many cycles and only works one way round. Some people stick with full size B over those, but C would be the choice here.

Has SDRplay gotten any better with Linux support? You can get it to work but it's clumsy at best (using Soapy and their API). With an AirSpy, it's trivial.

USB-B only has 4-wires in it. USB-C has what 12 ?? So why create more cost.

USB type B does the job for this application and is sturdy. The location of the port is much more of concern IMO.
Does sound like a interesting update, now I need to redo my home work before buying my RSP

The complaints about the type of USB port are overblown. My RSP2pro works perfectly fine with its USB B cable connected to a 2.0 port, and the RSP1B will perform just as well without a fancy pants USB C port. KISS.

Yes, that and as @foxtail wrote cost. USB C is still relatively new, and probably still under copyright, so licensing fees might be an issue as well. I don't know how many of these devices are manufactured and sold by this company annually, but obtaining a vender number is about $6K and a two year license to even use the logo is $3.5K. This means if it were only to raise the price to about a dollar, they would have to sell close to 100,000 of these in the first two years.
