Well:

RR's entry for Austin clearly states that encryption is and will be available to decrease the ability for the public to monitor the freqs.

I'm not sure if the same ecryption technique will be the same as in SA, but the end result is the same.

Here's hoping that does not happen any time soon.

Austin is a whole 'nuther creature - especially when it comes to politics.

just ask the old guy who wears a tutu with his buttcheeks showing on 6th street around Halloween with the banner that says "Austin PD sucks!"

APD would have hell to pay if they started encrypting talkgroups indiscriminately...

Now, its my turn to ask why? Especially in this climate of war and terrorism, it is not hard to imagine APD turning to encryption. I'm curious as to what is the reason SA encrypts.

Why could Austin not use the same excuse? And if that does not work I'm sure APD will use the Patriot Act 1 and/or 2 to get encryption on their talkgroups. But, all this is academic; encryption WILL happen in Austin. Trust me, it is just a matter of time.

Its a vicious cycle. Those whom we wish to monitor will continue to thwart our efforts and WE will continue to buy scanners with technology that supposedly will defeat their defenses.
