Hi guys, I have posted in a couple sub forums and I have been directed here! I am looking for RCMP frequencies and talk group IDs for the outlook and rosetown area. I am new to this so please forgive me. I have an opportunity to buy a psr 500 and learn best hands on. I know the area is p25 apco phase 1. I am unsure if it is encrypted or not...not exactly sure what this means. Buy first learn later! As long as I know this radio is capable and what the frequencies are for this area. Thanks a million guys.

HILARIOUS, In typical warm Canadian reception fashion those that live in \sask can tell you that according to database here \the \rcmp for your desired area \& for the rest of Canada for most part are ENC (Encrypted), that means you cannot listen to with any scanner or otherwise. As you have possibly bought from someone local whom forgot to tell you that you are SOL , I will attempt to illuminate you hear from \vancouver , according to list (see below) there are a few \digital channels that they use that u can hear but \i doubt you will hear much at all , even the Min of environment is ENC , WTF ??
So what you could hear is Fire, Ambulance and what ever else is digital on this system, first you will have to find the control channel for your area, tune in from 138 mhz-144. mhz find the sound of (like a machine gun)
enter that via software program.
Provincial Public Safety Telecommunications Network Trunking System, Provincewide, Saskatchewan - Scanner Frequencies
WHILE THAT radio is older it will do trick , especially if you buy used, there are newer radios with more bells and whistles, because once you find no police you have to shift your focus of listening.
And don't forget just cause you wont hear police if you hear a siren often Ambulance and Fire and not far behind (naturally depending on nature of call).
Good luck

Wow, thanks for the time and information. So very helpful. I really appreciate it. I understand what you mean now. A question though, https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=6509 , what are these groups? They are digital and not encrypted by the looks of it? Would there be any RCMP traffic on this system? As well, if they ever came out with a way to decrypt the system would there be a way that this gre psr 500 could instal a firmware update to allow it to decrypt or is this just something it will never be able to do. Thanks! Really appreciate it

Decryption is illegal in Canada. You will never see a publicly available device that will decrypt the system. I travel to SK often enough that I also listen to the system. While missing RCMP traffic, Fire/EMS can usually fill the holes when something major enough is occurring.

Perfect, thanks! Maybe a question for a different forum but maybe you could help me. What is the range of a psr 500. I live in between two towns about 30-40 km away. Would it pick up fire and ems that far away?

Pretty much all the RCMP talk groups are encrypted.

No the PSR-500 can not decrypt the audio, and it never will. Encryption is meant to keep people with scanners from listening.

So depends on your antenna , if u use stock whip it might give you one tower or two depending on saturation and which tower you will hear, if u want good results you need to place an antenna (wide band discone) up high as possible, than you should be able to hear numerous towers from all around you including Saskatoon.
If you mean freq range look it up on this web site, if you mean how far will my scanner pick up , read again above. I could guide you on putting up an antenna, that you would have to buy first.Possibly you need to learn the scanner first and understand the trunking concept, becuase judging on something you mentioned earlier you dont understand the info on the trunk system you are trying to hear.

Considering how narrow the spread from low to high, a 5/8wave antenna will work much better than a discone.

Agree with that, but in general terms )especially for the noob here) my own setup has a discone @60' up and i listen from 25-1300 Mhz, so not sure where he will go when he realizes no Police. So I am trying to enlighten on an all around solution.

I meant range as in distance that the psr 500 will receive as in miles. I am an amateur ham user but you are correct, this trunking is something completely new to me! I appreciate the patience

Too many variable to give a solid answer as to how far you will be able to hear any particular site.

Hi guys, I was ready to purchase my psr 500 and the guy sold it on me. Any chance that anyone knows where to buy a good used or decently priced one in Canada? Preferably Saskatoon. Thanks again for all the help. It is much appreciated

I found a RS Pro 651 on eBay. It should be here sometime this week. That is great to hear. If you have a link for frequencies or can share that would be great. Thanks
