Good morning!
I am new to Radio Reference.
I live in Albuquerque, NM and am a Ham Operator here. I'm getting into scanning for base / mobile use in ABQ and around the state so I can monitor while traveling on business.
Can anyone give me an idea as the best scanner for digital trunking? My home emergency services county (Bernalillo New Mexico) uses a EDACS ProVoice system. NM State Police is digital trunking.

I am considering a Uniden BCD996XT and having Scanner Master pre-program it for me. Not afraid to step up to the $$$ for that unit and pre-programming but don't want to spend the $$$ if another unit will do the same thing for me at less cost. I am learning about EDACS and understand that there are some transmissions that I simply won't be able to monitor.

I am currently working with a Radio Shack Pro-2096 and am very unhappy with the unit.
2 years old and banks 6-9 have died.
I programmed it myself and think I missed a lot of freqs. That's why I am thinking of paying Scanner Master to program the new unit for me.

Currently I am able to monitor Albuquerque PD & FD / BCSO PD & FD base transmissions - just not units in the field. I understand that will be the norm for EDACS?

I would also put in ABQ International, Double Eagle and El Paso International freqs along with ABQ Air Traffic Control Center but figure I could do that myself after the scanner came in.
Any thoughts appreciated as to the best scanner for these purposes.
Thanks!
Russ

Hey Russ,

You really are in the wrong place for monitoring. There are solutions but there are no out of the box scanner solutions for EDACS ProVoice; there are no scanners sold capable of decoding ProVoice. Might I suggest that you ask for some local advice in the New Mexico Regional Forum, for there are indeed folks in ABQ that are monitoring.
